Ole says the dressing room is bouncing

Saturday 02 March 2019 17:54

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals his Manchester United side is "full of confidence and belief" after the Reds dramatically fought back to beat Southampton 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The Reds trailed at the break to a Yan Valery wonder strike, but we fought back through a sublime effort from Andreas Pereira, before Romelu Lukaku put us ahead with a calm finish. Southampton drew level through a James Ward-Prowse free-kick before Lukaku grabbed the headlines by snatching a late winner. Paul Pogba had a stoppage-time penalty saved by Angus Gunn.

Speaking to MUTV and in his press conference after the dramatic game, the boss praised Andreas and Lukaku, as well as the United faithful.

Solskjaer: the Stretford End sucked the ball in

Ole was delighted the Reds got what they deserved against Southampton...

THE STRETFORD END SUCKED THE BALL IN

"I have got to enjoy every single second when I am in this position and I am. Then again, you just want the boys to win so much, to get what they deserved because they deserved it for the energy and the belief. We spoke at half-time about the Stretford End, normally they suck that ball in and today was the same. They just sucked the ball in, in the end, and I have to say they were great finishes, but, then again, it does help with that support behind the goal.

OUR DRESSING ROOM IS BOUNCING

"It was a great start, I have to say, and then the injury broke up the game a little bit. They contained us and made it an open game. It was a fantastic strike from the kid [Valery] and then the second goal they scored was a fantastic strike. What can you do about them? You can’t really do anything about it. So to score three goals ourselves is great. We showed great character. That dressing room is bouncing, full of belief and looking forward to Wednesday."

PLEASED FOR PEREIRA

"I am so pleased for him [Andreas]. He has had a couple of bad experiences here and we all know he is an Academy kid. We have seen him over the years, he has got quality. He had a couple of crosses in the first half and his strike was fantastic. We know what he is capable of, he has got loads of energy and drive. We maybe found a better position for him than a no.6, he is more of an 8 or 10. He has got quality in his passing crossing and shooting. A goal and an assist is a nice day for him to remember."

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT FOR LUKAKU

"He [Lukaku] is a good finisher and he loves scoring goals. Strikers who love scoring goals, you can’t beat it. You see the way he celebrated, and we see it every day in training, he practices all the time and that’s why he scores goals."

POGBA'S PENALTY MISS

"I just said to him there, 'get ready for the next one because you are going to take that one as well.’ I have missed penalties and he is a confident boy, he wants to go and take the next one and you want that character in the boys. Today, he really blasted it and he usually places them, but he will be okay. "

WE HAVE BELIEF FOR WEDNESDAY

"The team, the club, everyone, supporters [have spirit]. We go into every game with confidence and belief and we will do the same against PSG on Wednesday. We know it is an uphill task, but we can do it. It has happened before, this club has had so many great comebacks, but we have got eight straight wins [on the road], confidence is high and, if we are still in the game with 20 minutes to go, who knows?"
