Maguire and Wan-Bissaka start against Chelsea

Sunday 11 August 2019 15:38

Summer signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been selected to make their competitive Manchester United debuts against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has picked the pair to face the Blues in what is our opening Premier League game of the 2019/20 season.

Wan-Bissaka featured in each of our six pre-season fixtures, while today marks the first time Maguire has played in a red shirt following the completion of his move from Leicester City on Monday.

Fellow summer arrival Daniel James will start the match as one of our seven substitutes, while goalkeeper David De Gea captains United, having taken the armband for our final two friendlies.

The boss discusses his desire to land our recent signing Harry Maguire during the summer window.

Victor Lindelof will partner Maguire in the centre of our defence, with Wan-Bissaka at right-back and Luke Shaw starting on the left.

Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba will play in the centre of midfield, with the Frenchman returning to the line-up after missing last week’s penalty shoot-out victory over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.

Our two scorers from that game in Cardiff, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, will play as part of an advanced midfield trio, alongside Andreas Pereira, while Anthony Martial is likely to lead the line, even if Rashford could start there.

The 23-year-old Frenchman scored twice against the Blues in last season's fixture at Stamford Bridge, and will be hoping to make a strong start to the season today.

Ex-Chelsea players Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata feature among the substitutes and will hoping to make it on to the pitch to face their former team later this afternoon.

There are five Academy graduates in the starting XI and another two on the bench.

Speaking to MUTV on arrival, Ole said that he was looking forward to getting our campaign started.

"It is one of those, you have been waiting for it for a long time and it is finally here and the wait is over," Ole said to MUTV before the game. "We have had a great pre-season, the boys have really bought into our ideas and they have made it work. There is no reason why we should change too much.

"I am confident they are all capable, together or individually, to create or score goals and we expect [the front four] to be a goal threat for us.”
