Positive omens for Rashford and United before Palace tie

Tuesday 26 September 2023 13:44

Marcus Rashford played an integral role in our run to lifting the Carabao Cup under the Wembley arch back in February.

Our no.10 netted United’s second goal in the 2-0 final victory over Newcastle, ensuring he would score in every round on the Reds’ road to success in 2022/23.

Rashford’s prowess in front of goal while playing in the competition was nothing new last season either, and, as we prepare to begin our defence of the trophy against Crystal Palace tonight (Tuesday), his record in the League Cup may be a positive omen that could bear further fruit.

The Eagles come to town, as we begin our defence of the Carabao Cup.

According to stats gurus Opta, the England international has been directly involved in 19 goals across his last 16 appearances in the tournament, scoring 13 and assisting six.

That is a run that dates back to the start of 2017/18, and highlights the prolific touch that the 25-year-old has been in while representing United in the competition down the years.

Eight of those involvements came last term, with Marcus racking up six goals and two assists on the way to hoisting aloft the silverware as a member of Erik ten Hag’s triumphant side.

Rashford is now a two-time winner of the competition and only Mark Hughes (16) and Brian McClair (19) have more goals in it for United than him (14).

While those numbers could be positive signs for what we can expect from the forward if he is selected by Ten Hag, Marcus’s record against Palace is also one to keep an eye on later, in the 20:00 BST kick-off.

The Academy graduate has been involved in five goals across his 10 career starts against the Londoners, scoring twice and assisting on three occasions.

Fittingly, the most recent of his strikes was the decisive effort in the last meeting between the two clubs: February’s 2-1 victory for United at Old Trafford, in the Premier League. You can enjoy the highlights from that match below.
