Pogba honoured to wear the armband

Saturday 11 August 2018 00:01

Paul Pogba spoke to MUTV after his excellent display in Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The World Cup-winning midfielder was described as a "monster" by manager Jose Mourinho after contributing so much on the back of only a few days' work at the Aon Training Complex. He captained the team and opened the scoring with a penalty, while also winning our Man-of-the-Match award.

Here is what Paul had to say...

BEING SKIPPER

"It's always a pleasure for me, an honour to wear this armband. A lot of big players for story of the club [have had it]. It's something great. To win today was most important. I scored a penalty, I'm very happy and really happy we started with a win."

IMPORTANCE OF THE JOB

"It's not a role you have to do. I think with everybody, all the players, all the team-mates, make you comfortable to wear this and proud to wear this. Even like when Michael Carrick came to talk to me and told me he wanted me to wear it because of the story of what I give to the club, to the people, to the fans, to the young players in the Academy. Stuff like that - they look up to me. I want to give back to them and always try my best to be thankful to the fans and to my team-mates."

Paul Pogba was a controlling influence in midfield.

TAKING THE PENALTY

"The last time we had a penalty, I gave it to Alexis, to him for his first game in the Premier League, or something like that, to score the penalty. For me, it's not a problem to leave a penalty to him. As long as we score and win the game, I'm happy."

THE THREE-MAN MIDFIELD

Andreas [Pereira] has been playing very well in pre-season, I saw it, and Fred came in and did great. I saw the ability and they're two great players. Andreas is younger but has the quality and the personality to play in the Premier League. Fred came in and, for his first game, did great. It's his first game and you know you have to adapt. It's not easy. He's done a great job in the win today.

GREAT BACKING FOR SHAW

"Luke is someone who works very hard in training. People criticise him and he didn't have a lot of chances to play last season. But every time he played, he did a great job and showed something great. I think he deserves respect and people to be very happy about him. Look at his statistics, look at his game. Look at them and don't criticise because of his body or whatever. You saw today his personality. He did a great job and helped the team to win.
