Paul Pogba after the victory.

The stats behind Pogba's display

Paul Pogba's exceptional performance against Newcastle United helped spur Manchester United to a stirring 3-2 success at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman was particularly impressive in the second half, after a tactical tweak by manager Jose Mourinho. Although the boss insisted the club's record buy did not operate at centre-back in a three-man defence alongside Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic, he was noticeably deeper and was able to dictate the play.

He set up Anthony Martial's equaliser with a clever flick and also passed to Ashley Young to allow the right-back to cross for Alexis Sanchez to plunder a dramatic 90th-minute winner.

Pogba has now had a hand in more Premier League goals for the Reds than any other player since Jose took over (13 goals and 16 assists), according to Opta.

Many of Pogba's statistics were superb as he had six shots, three on target, more than anybody else on the pitch. He also led the way on passes (87), passes in the opposition half (59) and touches (111). Showing his strength, he was involved in 15 duels (the most) and won all three of his aerial challenges.

Bringing the ball forward with real purpose, the World Cup winner also made more sprints (14) than any of his colleagues, and he was clearly delighted afterwards with the amazing turnaround.

Pogba collected 43 per cent of the fans' Man-of-the-Match vote on our official Twitter account @ManUtd, finishing 13% clear of his fellow Frenchman Anthony Martial.

Juan Mata, who scored the Reds' first goal with a free-kick, and Ashley Young were the other nominees.

Thank you to everybody who voted.
