Schmeichel congratulates De Gea after milestone

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel had nothing but praise for current Reds goalkeeper David De Gea, after our no.1 equalled the Dane’s record of 180 clean sheets for the club with his shut-out against Leicester City on Sunday.

David was, once again, in superb form and instrumental in the Reds keeping a clean sheet against the Foxes, producing brilliant stops from Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho in the first half, as United ran out eventual 3-0 victors.

This shut-out against Leicester was David’s 180th since joining the club in 2011, and draws the 32-year-old level with fellow United legend Schmeichel at the top of the chart.

David kept his 180th clean sheet for the Reds, during the 3-0 victory against Leicester.

Following the match, the Great Dane applauded the Spaniard’s “great achievement.”

The 180th clean sheet was hard earned, but well deserved with two out-of-this-world saves,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Well done @D_DeGea, many congratulations, what a fantastic achievement.”

As we begin to look ahead to Thursday’s Europa League play-off second leg against Barcelona, David will no doubt be striving to go one better than Schmeichel at the top of the all-time clean sheet table, by keeping La Liga's leaders out.

He will have to be at his best, of course, against a Catalan side who contributed heavily to the cut and thrust of the first leg, which will go down as one of the best encounters between the two sides.

There remains much of the season still to play, and with De Gea in such fine form, he will hope to add yet another personal accolade to his list before the 2022/23 campaign is out.

Well done, David, keep up the good work!
