Player-of-the-Month nominees revealed

Friday 28 February 2020 15:00

The three nominees for Manchester United’s February Player-of-the-Month award have been announced.

The Reds enjoyed a fine spell in February, collecting seven points from the nine on offer in the Premier League, while also securing a last-16 Europa League tie with LASK, thanks to an emphatic 6-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge.

With so many good performances over the last few weeks, there are plenty of worthy candidates for the latest monthly award, with Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw eventually making the shortlist ahead of other strong contenders such as Fred, Harry Maguire, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

HOW TO VOTE

The Player of the Month poll is now open on our Official App, which is free to download.

BRUNO FERNANDES

What a start our January recruit has made to his United career! The Portugal international played all five matches last month and registered two goals. Bruno put us ahead during the Premier League clash against Watford and the home leg of our Europa League tie with Club Brugge with a pair of penalties. The midfielder also delivered an excellent cross to set up Harry Maguire’s header in the victory over Chelsea, while, against Watford, he provided the assist for Mason Greenwood’s goal and laid on the pass for Anthony Martial’s chip earlier in the game. Bruno’s impressive inaugural month in a red jersey has seen him earn rave reviews from pundits, fans and from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

ANTHONY MARTIAL

Our no.9 was on fire last month and netted three in four matches. After being shut out against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Martial scored the crucial opening goal at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of a towering header. Three days later, the Frenchman netted an excellent solo goal as the Reds fought back from a goal behind to earn a 1-1 draw away to Club Brugge, before he scored that audacious chip during our 3-0 victory over Watford. Given Marcus Rashford’s absence during the whole of February, much of the scoring burden has fallen on Anthony and the 24-year-old has flourished with the added responsibility, and has already established an excellent relationship with Fernandes.

LUKE SHAW

The defender’s showings over the last few weeks have been so outstanding he faced questions in a recent press conference about whether he is enjoying a ‘career-best’ run of form. Luke’s performances have been even more impressive given he has flitted between left-back and left-sided centre-half. He has excelled in both roles and played a vital role as we conceded just one goal across the five games in February, with Luke playing every single minute of football during the month.
