Premier League Collection: Best games v Brentford

Wednesday 08 June 2022 16:00

Manchester United will find out when we are scheduled to lock horns with Brentford for only the third and fourth occasion in the Premier League via the fixtures release next Thursday (16 June).

United faced the Bees for the first time since the league’s formation in 1992 last season, following the latter’s promotion to the top flight, ending a gap of over 46 years since the last contest in the fixture.

Our matches against the London club in the 2022/23 campaign are therefore set to add to a recently revitalised record that we share with one of our most infrequent opponents in the competition’s history.

Despite that fact, we can already boast fond memories from the game’s short Premier League archive, following two strong performances last season.

19 January 2022: Our first-ever visit to the Brentford Community Stadium...

BRENTFORD 1 UNITED 3 (2021/22)
A reunion with the Bees was put on hold from its original December 2021 date due to a Covid-19 outbreak at United, but the game was worth the wait when we made our first-ever trip to the new Brentford Community Stadium just over a month later. After a tough first half in which David De Gea was in top form to keep the score at 0-0, the Reds took charge when the teams emerged for the second period. Ralf Rangnick’s side took the lead via Anthony Elanga’s second senior goal, after he was neatly picked out by an incisive through ball from Fred. Mason Greenwood made it 2-0 a few minutes later before Marcus Rashford extended our lead off the bench. The home side did find a way past De Gea late on, via Ivan Toney, but it wasn’t enough to put a dampener on a triumphant midweek evening in the capital for United.

In May, Brentford were the visitors to Old Trafford for what would be our final home match of the campaign. Looking to reward our M16 supporters, United took an early lead through Bruno Fernandes’s 50th goal for the club, after a good piece of work from Elanga to tee up our no.18. The Londoners’ attack, spearheaded by Christian Eriksen, kept the Reds in check, meaning Cristiano Ronaldo’s second-half penalty offered some welcome breathing room. Raphael Varane got in on the act with his first United strike late in the proceedings to complete the scoring at 3-0, before several departing players waved farewell to the Theatre of Dreams at full-time.
