Roma announce travelling squad for United semi-final

Wednesday 28 April 2021 15:31

Roma have named a 21-man squad for Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Most notably, former United players Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have both been included in the group bound for Manchester.

It will be Smalling’s first visit back to M16 since his permanent move to Roma in the summer, having also spent the previous season on loan with the Serie A side. The defender has overcome a recent thigh problem and has been passed fit to travel with the team.

Mkhitaryan also spent last season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico before completing a transfer from Arsenal in the summer, a club he has previously faced United with at Old Trafford, during our 2-2 draw with the Gunners in the Premier League, back in December 2018.

The Giallorossi’s travelling party also includes former Manchester City forward Edin Džeko and ex-Newcastle United full-back Davide Santon, along with French midfielder Jordan Veretout who has previously played for Aston Villa.

Roma manager Paulo Fonseca will be without former Barcelona and Chelsea winger Pedro, however, as the Spaniard is absent through injury.

Riccardo Calafiori and Nicolo Zaniolo are also in the treatment room and therefore haven’t been included in the first-leg squad.

Italy international Gianluca Mancini is another player that will miss Thursday’s game at Old Trafford due to suspension, having picked up his third yellow card of this season’s competition against Ajax in the second leg of the previous round.

However, the centre-back will be eligible to return for next week’s meeting in Rome.
