Amorim: We wanted to show our fans we're improving

Sunday 25 May 2025 19:45

Ruben Amorim described Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season as "a good feeling" as he promised that "better days are coming".

The Reds ended a disappointing campaign in 15th in the table but put on an encouraging performance against a Villa side who missed out on Champions League qualification on goal difference.

Amad’s header and Christian Eriksen’s penalty in the closing 15 minutes saw United past Unai Emery’s team at Old Trafford - three days after our Europa League final defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

Amorim: We're working on the culture

INTERVIEW | Ruben is pleased to see some of the work at Carrington transferring to the pitch...

WE DESERVED TO WIN

“We played really well. We were really brave, really intense. We blocked completely the opponent and created so many chances and deserved the win. Nothing to lose - that was the feeling. We just wanted to show something to our fans and we felt, even in the final [against Tottenham Hotspur], we were the better team. We wanted to show again today that we are improving in certain aspects and I felt we did that.”

WE ARE WORKING ON IMPROVING RESULTS

“The feeling of a tough season will be there but I’m always confident because we are doing things at Carrington that people cannot see. We need to acknowledge it will take time. We are going to suffer a little bit more but better days are coming. We are changing things that you can't see in the results. You can't see today but they are there. It's in the culture. It's the way we behave and do things every day."

GOOD FEELING TO WIN

“Difficult week. Tough on everybody. But it was good spirits from the players and supporters today. So we finished a terrible and hard season with a win. It's a good feeling. It's a special club with special people. We already know that. That's why it's so hard to disappoint them when we play badly. It was a tough season, but this club is more than this and we will try to do better next season.”

IMPORTANT TO SAY SORRY AND THANK OUR FANS

“I think it was the most important thing to do because it’s the truth. We need to apologise for this season for the mistakes we did during the season and we need to be thankful and grateful because of the environment that we live today. These kinds of moments, I think they are really important for the club. Sometimes, it’s not just the results, it’s something more than that so I think it was the two most important things to do today - to say sorry and to say thanks.”

ASTON VILLA’S DISALLOWED GOAL

“I didn't see the goal. But if it's not the right decision, the manager should be frustrated."

BRUNO WANTS EVERYONE TO SHOW FIGHT LIKE HIM

“It’s really important [for him to be a leader]. He just wants to see everybody work as hard as him and that’s something we need to do. He loves this club, he wants to fight in every moment. He was, like the rest of the team, so disappointed with the final so let’s move on.”

Ruben makes a promise to the fans, as long as everybody sticks together at United.

WE HAVE A PLAN FOR THE SUMMER

“Of course, we have a plan that we have been working on for a while. We have rules to follow, the Fair Play rules, so we are limited. We have a pre-season to work with the players, without a World Cup this year. We need to be really strong in every aspect - in recruitment and to improve the players we have.”

NEXT SEASON MUST BE BETTER

“It must be better, much better because it’s impossible to be worse. We need to get results but again, I think we have to be really honest with our fans. It’s going to take a while but we are going to play better and we are going to get better results.”
