Scott tells youngsters to grab chance

Friday 15 July 2022 07:00

Every pre-season game - including Melbourne Victory (11:05 BST Friday 15 July) - will be shown live on MUTV, now available in our app and on ManUtd.com.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay wants the youngsters present on Tour 2022 to embrace the opportunity to impress with both hands.

Fourteen of Erik ten Hag’s 31-man squad are below the age of 23 and several have only made a handful of first-team appearances for United.

The likes of Amad, Facundo Pellistri, Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal have already stood out on this tour, during the second half of the 4-0 win over Liverpool and Scott used the example of 24-year-old Marcus Rashford as a player to be inspired by, with our no.10 now having made over 300 appearances for the Reds since making a surprise debut when our forward line was injury hit in February 2016.

Scott believes that the arrival of Erik ten Hag has provided the squad with a reset and anyone can now make their case for minutes.

McTominay outlines his intentions as Tour 2022 begins in Bangkok...

“Yeah, obviously the younger you are, the less experienced you are, [except] in some cases… like Marcus, or somebody like that, who's got a hell of a lot of experience for his age,” McTominay told us earlier in the trip.

“He's played in an extraordinary amount of games and obviously those boys have got to look to somebody like Marcus and guys like that as an inspiration to where they can get to if they keep nailing down the details and obviously impressing the manager, doing everything that you can possibly do to try and get in the team, they’ve got to be doing [that].

“Same for us, like it's a fresh life for everybody.

“Just because you’ve played 300 games for the club or 50, it doesn't mean that you're a guaranteed starter in the team every week. You still have to prove yourself.

“So just come enjoy yourself, play with a smile on your face, but make sure that you’re dialled in and you’re focused, whenever the time is right.”
