Steve Bruce recalls 1993 title-winning celebrations

Tuesday 09 May 2023 12:14

It’s exactly 30 years to the day since Manchester United rounded off a historic 1992/93 campaign with a 2-1 victory at Wimbledon on the final day of the inaugural Premier League season.

Goals from Paul Ince and Bryan Robson were enough for the three points that afternoon at Selhurst Park, but United were already safe in the knowledge that the title had been wrapped up seven days earlier.

Second place Aston Villa’s surprising loss at home to Oldham Athletic ended our 26-year wait for a league crown, sparking celebrations far and wide, including for our players, who headed to Steve Bruce’s house to toast the occasion.

Our legendary former centre-back, who played an integral role in our success that term, is the guest on this week’s episode of the UTD Podcast, during which he recalled hosting the party for his team-mates on the night we became Premier League champions for the first time.

Bruce: First title was the best

Steve Bruce takes us back to May 1993, recalling the celebrations of United's first Premier League title...

“I remember ringing Sir Alex [Ferguson] saying there’s a few players [that have] turned up at the house and he said, ‘Well make sure they’re home for 10,’” Bruce begins during his appearance on our club podcast, discussing what was the night before our penultimate game of the season, against Blackburn.

“I said, ‘What? In the morning?’

“[He responded] ‘Better not be.’ The phone goes down, you know?

“I don’t know how that came about [the party at my house]. I really, really don’t know because as I said to you, there wasn’t mobile phones or anything then, but it got round that they’re all going to come to my house.

“I don’t know why they were coming to my house but anyway they did, and we had a good time to say the least.”

While the Reds may only remember so much from that night, the following evening – 3 May 1993 – is one that will live long in United folklore.

The team lifted the Premier League trophy at Old Trafford in front of our jubilant fans, after defeating Rovers 3-1 in our final home outing of the term.

“I remember Sir Matt [Busby] and the atmosphere at the stadium when we were playing Blackburn and let’s be fair, half of us were half-cut from the day before and still managed to win 3-1,” Bruce jokes.

“I’m always going to say the first one [title win] was always going to be the best because I think the people had waited so long.

“The supporters had waited so long and there was a big [feeling that] we were never going to make it at one stage. So, to win it was, for me, the ultimate.

“To think that Man United hadn’t won that league for 26 years is quite ridiculous really when you think of what happened from the first one.
