Team news for Lyon friendly

Tuesday 18 July 2023 16:27

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has some fresh options for his line-up, when the Reds take on Lyon in our second pre-season fixture.

The friendly, being staged at BT Murrayfield in Edinburgh, is live on MUTV and tickets are available to purchase right up to the 14:00 BST kick-off time.

Jonny Evans has been included in the group after training with the Reds, following his exit from Leicester City. With fellow defenders Rhys Bennett and Tyrell Malacia both ruled out of the Lyon match and Tour 2023 of the United States, the Northern Ireland international has signed a short-term deal and will also be available for the Wrexham clash in San Diego.

There is good news regarding Antony and Donny van de Beek, who have both made the trip to Scotland. Antony was ruled out of the Emirates FA Cup final against Manchester City in June, after picking up an injury in the win over Chelsea, our penultimate Premier League game of the campaign.

Van de Beek, who also missed the 2-0 win over Leeds United in Oslo, has not featured since sustaining a knee injury against Bournemouth back in January.

Fred was another absentee in Norway, despite travelling to Scandinavia, but is fit enough to compete for a spot against Laurent Blanc's Ligue 1 side.

Mason Mount is in line to make his second appearance, after impressing on his maiden outing, while young forwards Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill are retained after scoring the goals against Leeds.

Matej Kovar, who came on at half-time for Tom Heaton in Norway, is jostling with Nathan Bishop and 17-year-old Elyh Harrison, who joined from Stevenage's Academy last year.

Lyon, meanwhile, look set to be without former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, after he picked up a knock in pre-season.

It promises to be an entertaining encounter against the French outfit, before the Reds embark on a flight to the US in advance of the weekend's big clash with Arsenal in New Jersey.
