Ole Gunnar Solskjaer points during Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United.

Three changes for United at Southampton

Saturday 31 August 2019 11:35

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made three changes to his Manchester United team to take on Southampton, from the one that started against Crystal Palace last week.

The injuries suffered to Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial in that clash means the boss was always going to be forced to shuffle the pack for our trip to the south coast.

In their place, Ole has selected Ashley Young - who captains the side - and Andreas Pereira, who scored a spectacular goal against Southampton at Old Trafford last season.

The other change from last weekend’s side sees Juan Mata come in for Jesse Lingard, who is named on the bench.
Juan Mata makes a first start of the season this afternoon.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ole said: "Luke and Anthony are injured so Ash is an easy decision in there.

"For me, Andreas did really well in the first game and he’s chomping at the bit to come in again. Juan has been very good in the games we’ve had behind closed doors as well and we felt it was time for him to get the chance today."

That means United will once again begin with David De Gea between the sticks, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof start in the back four alongside Young.

Shielding the defence are Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, who are starting in the centre of the park for the fourth Premier League game in a row.

Ahead of them, Pereira, Mata and Daniel James will support Marcus Rashford in attack.

Discussing Mata's inclusion, the manager said: "We do have different options and Jesse and Juan are two different players. Today we decided on Juan for experience a little bit, with Ash on that side.

"We’ve been a young side and of course it’s always good to get the old heads on the pitch in a difficult game. It’s going to be tough. They [Southampton] press hard, they’re direct and go for loads of second balls so we’ll have to be strong mentally as well."

Leading the line at St Mary's is will be Rashford. The England international has netted three goals so far this season and will be hoping to increase that tally on the south coast.

As for the hosts, it’s two changes for them, with Cedric Soares and Sofiane Boufal replacing Yan Valery and Nathan Redmond.
