The Debate: Ten Hag’s likely changes for Omonia

Thursday 06 October 2022 10:54

Ahead of Manchester United's Europa League clash with Omonia Nicosia, set to take place in at the GSP Stadium this evening, panellists on the latest episode of The Debate discussed which alterations Erik ten Hag should make to his side for the trip to Cyprus.

The Dutchman is expected to make changes after Sunday's loss to Manchester City, with United looking to record a second consecutive Europa League win, following the victory away to Sheriff Tiraspol last time out.

But out of all of the players Ten Hag has at his disposal in Cyprus, AP’s James Robson believes that one Red is certain to be involved: Anthony Martial.

“I think with Martial; we’ve not seen much of him since Ten Hag arrived, but it’s probably fair to say that United have looked at their best when he’s been at the point of their attack,” Robson said of the striker, who scored two against City on Sunday.

“Unfortunately, as has been the case with him, he got another injury. He is back, he’s fit, the two goals [against City] will have done his confidence the world of good.

“Ever since he came [to United] and he scored that goal against Liverpool, we thought ‘wow there’s a player there.’

“Circumstances have got us to the point where maybe, just maybe, this is his chance.”

Former Red, Ben Thornley, agreed with Robson, predicting that the Frenchman could play a pivotal role for Ten Hag’s side this term.

“He had a good pre-season,” said Thornley. “It’s been a shame that [his season has] been dogged by injury so far.

“Even the full half he played against Liverpool, he played a real part in us winning that game, and if we’re going to continue to see that Anthony Martial, then undoubtedly he’s going to be key for us.”

Erik ten Hag says he will continue to ease the Frenchman back into first-team action.

In addition to Martial, the panellists expect Ten Hag to bring summer signing Casemiro into his side to face Omonia.

“You know what he can do; he’s won everything,” said David May of the five-time Champions League winner. “He needs to start games and for me, he’s perfect for Thursday.”

Robson agreed with the former United defender, explaining the impact the Brazilian would have for the Reds and how Ten Hag may reconfigure his midfield to accommodate the enforcer.

“Casemiro is exactly the kind of player to stop attacks [and] stop breakaways,” he said. “He’s a brilliant player.

“This might be an opportunity [to switch up the midfield].

“[Christian] Eriksen at no.10, I like the idea of that. I like Eriksen anywhere to be honest. Maybe then Fred and Casemiro [deeper]. Fred almost to help Casemiro through a bit because they know each other. There’s a ready-made relationship there already.

“I would like the look of that.”
