Edinson Cavani celebrates a goal in Manchester United's black-and-white third kit

The Third Kit: An Icon in the Making

Thursday 06 May 2021 17:03

When you think of iconic Manchester United kits, what springs to mind? Did you have a poster of collared-up Cantona in that lace-up number from 1993/94?

Maybe it’s the classic stripped back /blue number that United wore to become the first Kings of Europe, or maybe even the invisible grey kit that Sir Alex had the team change out of at half-time. Everyone has a favourite.

Iconic kits aren’t confined to the history books though, and this season’s third kit is going down as an absolute scorcher. If you look up a definition for the word ‘iconic’ you might see words like ‘highly original’ and ‘a work of art’. It might seem like a bold statement, but this kit is bold enough to fit the bill.

It’s seen some scorching action on the pitch this season, so let’s take a look at some of the highlights in this kit, starting with United’s game at the San Siro to take on AC Milan, coming away with a 1-0 win thanks to Man of the Match Paul Pogba. It might well be a lucky shirt for the Frenchman, who also bagged the Man of the Match prize in the monochrome shirt at West Ham away in December. Get your Pogba third kit from United Direct.

How about some of our more recent on-pitch action? As well as signing a contract extension to keep him at the club until June 2022, no. 7 Cavani has been on fire in recent games, netting a brace against Roma to see United comfortably through to the Europa League final in Gdansk.

The Uruguayan has been on fire recently and had plenty of opportunities to show off his signature goal celebration, hitting the back of the net against Aston Villa last week too. Get your Cavani shirt now and get practicing your Cupid's arrow celebrations in your living room.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes had another show-stopping performance against West Ham at the London Stadium in the third kit, setting up Pogba and Greenwood’s goals and generally being incredible. See if you can recreate some of that skill by bagging yourself a Bruno third kit from United Direct.

Speaking of the Portugese #18, did you also catch the moment he found out, live on TV, that he was set to captain the side against PSG at the Parc des Princes in October? Bruno led the Reds to a 2-1 superb victory on *that* rainy night in Paris, scoring the first goal but missing out on Man of the Match to Axel Tuanzebe.

As if any more reasons are needed to hammer the point home that this kit has got some serious cool points, check out Goldenballs himself, David Beckham rocking it in the sunshine. While we can’t guarantee you’ll look as cool as Becks, it’s worth a try. Get yours now or regret it later.

Players and legends have been rocking the kit, but how about fans? Fans have been loving it across our @weareunited instagram. Burna Boy has won some serious brownie points with us for his styling of the shirt, not to forget Luis, the VP of our Mexican Supporters’ Club who is styling it out, and definitely not in Manchester by the looks of the weather. Think you can do better? Get yours at United Direct and prove it by tagging us @weareunited for a chance to be featured.

Next time someone asks you what the most iconic kit is, don’t forget this season’s third kit. Just ‘cos it’s new, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t qualify.
