The week ahead for United

Monday 01 April 2019 20:00

This first week of April will be a busy one for Manchester United, as the Under-23s and the Under-18s will be in action as well as the senior team.

Here’s everything you need to keep an eye on from Monday 1 April to Sunday 7 April...

MONDAY

Reflections on Saturday’s win over Watford in the Premier League will include reaction from Juan Mata, in the Spaniard's weekly blog. We'll also be opening our Player of the Month poll for March, to see who'll follow in the footsteps of February winner Ander Herrera.

In the evening, The Paddy Crerand Show on MUTV at 18:30 BST will see the 1968 European Cup winner talk all things United, including our home victory over the Hornets and the Wolves clash on Tuesday.

On this date in 2000, United picked up an impressive 7-1 win over West Ham in the Premier League. Paul Scholes grabbed a hat-trick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored a late goal four minutes after coming on as a substitute.

TUESDAY

We'll preview and cover the evening's Premier League game against Wolves, a side we are yet to beat this season after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and a 2-1 defeat to Nuno Santo’s men at Molineux in the Emirates FA Cup. Live build-up to the game on MUTV begins at 18:15 BST, with the game set to kick off at 19:45 BST.

It's eight years since Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick against West Ham on this date in the 2010/11 campaign, as we came back from 2-0 down to win the game at the Boleyn Ground 4-2.

WEDNESDAY

We will continue to reflect on the result at Molineux Stadium and assess how the results of Chelsea’s game against Brighton and Tottenham’s clash against Crystal Palace will impact our top-four hopes.

THURSDAY

Another anniversary for a memorable Wayne Rooney performance - on this day in 2015, he scored with a volley that rocketed into the back of the net as we beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford. Ander Herrera notched up a brace.

FRIDAY

Ricky Sbragia’s United Under-23s side will take on Newcastle United in Premier League 2 Division 2, as the young Reds look to close the gap on the league’s top five teams. The game will be staged at Old Trafford, giving some young players a chance to play on the hallowed turf for the first time.

Friday 5 April will mark ten years since Federico Macheda scored a sensational injury-time winner on his debut against Aston Villa, helping us to a 3-2 win at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the other two goals.

Also on this day, back in 2003, Ole was on the scoresheet during our 4-0 win over arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. Ruud van Nistelrooy netted twice, while Ryan Giggs also found the net.

SATURDAY

Our Under-18s will face Sunderland's Under-18s at the Aon Training Complex, as Neil Ryan’s men will look to go past the Everton Under-18s, who have a game in hand and are two points ahead of the Reds.

On 6 April 2011, Wayne Rooney scored United’s only goal during our compact 1-0 win over Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. This away goal at Stamford Bridge helped us strengthen the grip on the tie, as went on to beat the Blues 2-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford.

SUNDAY

On 7 April last year, we mounted a sensational comeback at the Etihad and delayed Manchester City from winning the Premier League title. After Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan had scored a goal each in the first half, a spirited second-half show from the Reds saw Paul Pogba score twice in two minutes, before Chris Smalling’s 69th-minute winner handed us all three derby points.
