Five things we noticed at Bramall Lane

Saturday 21 October 2023 22:06

Manchester United defeated Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday, a day where sadness befell the Reds due to the passing of club legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

A wreath was laid and tributes were given, as both clubs came together to celebrate a man who is not only an icon for Manchester United, but football as a whole.

The match was settled by goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot, as the Reds had too much for our hosts and travel back to M16 with three points.

On a day that saw us lose Sir Bobby, it seems rather fitting that the efforts that won the match for United were from an Academy graduate and a fierce outside-of-the-box strike.

After a match that contained much emotion, read about five key things we noticed at Bramall Lane...

Obituary: Sir Bobby Charlton

From the depths of Munich, Sir Bobby carved out one of the greatest careers in football history.

TRIBUTES TO SIR BOBBY

The first tribute to the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton was heard from the away end before kick-off, as our fans loudly chanted 'Hello, hello, we are the Busby Boys' in memory of the United legend and the great Sir Matt Busby era in which he made his breakthrough. Our travelling supporters, while saddened by today's news, celebrated a man who epitomised the core values of Manchester United.

A minute's applause was held before the start of the match, as both sets of players, staff, and supporters paid tribute to Sir Bobby. While the footballing world shares in the pain of losing a great person, it is united by the memory of what he brought to the city of Manchester and England as a whole.

The appreciation for this iconic figure continued throughout, with our travelling supporters taking the match as an opportunity to share their unerring love for Sir Bobby as a footballer and a person.

ONANA PLAYS A KEY ROLE

Within just moments of the kick-off, Oli McBurnie had a great chance to open the scoring for the hosts but Onana was equal to it with a smart save to deny the Blades.

Just after 20 minutes, with the hosts pushing for an opener, Cameron Archer broke through the midfield and advanced to the edge of the box before firing a low shot across goal. Onana, once again, showed his dynamism to get down low and thwart the Sheffield United striker with a strong right palm.

He couldn't do much about McBurnie's penalty but Andre responded well and made a great block from Archer when the Blades striker threatened to edge the hosts ahead. In the second half, Onana was once more on hand to deny the hosts, palming away Rhian Brewster's fierce strike and ultimately laying the foundations for our 2-1 victory.

LINDELOF'S RESILIENCE

Just days after the Sweden captain was part of an abandoned match against Belgium, due to a horrific terror attack in Brussels, Victor Lindelof was back in the starting XI for United.

The defender, who Erik ten Hag said was in the correct frame of mind to play against Sheffield United, was resilient at left-back once more, thwarting the Blades' endeavours to get in down his side. Victor was also comfortable in possession and made some key interceptions and defensive headers to keep the hosts at bay.

AMRABAT THE ANCHOR

Sofyan Amrabat was named as the man at the foot of our midfield, with Casemiro injured, and displayed his physicality from the off, putting in a couple of robust tackles and challenging for headers.

Most crucially, in the first half when Archer broke through, the Moroccan made a last-ditch sliding challenge and combined with Onana to dispel the danger.

He almost got on the scoresheet too, rattling the crossbar with a powerful drive from the edge of the box in the second half.

McTominay: We're all thinking of Sir Bobby

Scott pays a touching tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton following the sad news of his passing.

MAGUIRE CONTINUES HIS FORM

Once again, Harry Maguire was pivotal in the United defence. The England international – who got the assist for Scott McTominay's last-gasp winner against Brentford before the international break – won pretty much every header and was often in the right place to cut out dangerous-looking Sheffield United attacks, man-handling their forwards with ease.

Couple this solidity with Maguire's superb passing range, and it's easy to see why Harry started against the Blades. Across the match, he played raking, pinpoint balls to his team-mates, allowing United to build attacks in forward areas.
