Olympics update: Second games for Groenen and Toone

Saturday 24 July 2021 20:01

Manchester United Women midfielder Jackie Groenen played 90 minutes as the Netherlands drew 3-3 Brazil in their second group-stage match at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Groenen was named in the starting XI by head coach Sarina Wiegman and was at the heart of the action throughout a frantic match at the Miyagi Stadium.

The Netherlands had twice taken the lead through Arsenal’s Vivienne Miedema but were pegged back both times before Ludmila’s 68th-minute effort put Brazil in front for the first time in the match, at 3-2, entering the closing stages.

But Dominique Janssen’s impressive long-range free-kick ensured Jackie and co would take a point from their second Group F match.

It means that the Leeuwinnen need only a point from their final group fixture against China on Tuesday to confirm their qualification for the knockout stage, having convincingly swept aside Zambia 10-3 earlier in the week, in their opening game of the tournament.

Elsewhere in the women’s football competition, Ella Toone cheered on her Team GB colleagues as they secured a place in the next round with a second victory in the space of four days, overcoming hosts Japan 1-0 in Sapporo.

Toone, who came on as a substitute in the first game against Chile, was not named in the matchday squad this time around, as Manchester City’s Ellen White scored her third goal in two matches to keep the side’s one hundred per cent record at the tournament intact.

Hege Riise’s team will now go into their final Group E match against second-placed Canada on Tuesday knowing that a point will be enough to see them advance as group winners.

Toone (second row, far left) captioned this photo with "w" for win on her Instagram story.

After the match, Ella posted a photo with her team-mates on Instagram, as they celebrated the win on the bus back from the stadium.

Congratulations to Team GB and here’s to Jackie joining her United colleague in the knockout stages!
