United's Under-18s celebrating a goal at Carrington.

U18s report and highlights: United 3 West Ham 1

Wednesday 04 March 2026 14:55

Manchester United are going back to the U18 Premier League Cup final, after a 3-1 triumph over West Ham United at the last-four stage.

Joel Kerr's opener had put the visitors and reigning title-holders ahead at Carrington, before Gabriel's equaliser got us back on terms before half-time.

The 1-1 scoreline was the same at the final whistle, meaning an extra 30 minutes was needed, in which goals from Nathaniel-Junior Brown and Kai Rooney ensured United's progression.

Darren Fletcher's young Reds will now face Crystal Palace in the final of the competition that we won back in 2024, after they beat Spurs in their own semi-final clash.

FIRST HALF - TWO CLINICAL FINISHES

It was West Ham who made the brighter start in the Carrington sunshine, but two deliveries flashed across goal - one from either flank - was as far as they threatened in a cagey opening.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium throughout the first half, watched pitchside by Academy director Stephen Torpey. Despite the lack of opportunities, United did look the more likely to score in the opening half hour.

An inswinging free-kick from Jim Thwaites was gratefully grasped by Hammers goalkeeper Finley Hooper after appearing to take a slight diversion off Daniel Armer in the penalty area. Later in the half, Louie Bradbury did well to create a shooting opportunity with a neat touch away from defender Callum Leacock, but the latter remained in close attention to get a block in.

With the scoreline still reading 0-0 in the 32nd minute, it was West Ham who were the first to find the net, through Kerr. The midfielder pounced on a loose ball in the middle of the park and drove to the edge of our 18-yard area, shifted the ball onto his left foot and reversed a low effort into the far bottom corner.

It took just 10 minutes for United to respond, though. A punching pass through the lines from captain Armer found left-back Jacob Watson in an advanced area. The latter showed composure to produce a cutback for Gabriel that was precise enough for our no.10 to run onto it without breaking stride, and sidefoot home a first-time finish.

SECOND HALF - BIG SAVES IN GOALLESS HALF

Noah Ajayi continued to try and make something happen with mazy dribbles from United’s left wing, and nearly had his moment just after half-time, but for his strike being blocked at source following an eye-catching weave into the penalty area.

Reds goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes didn’t have much to do in the opening 45 but was kept busy around the hour mark. First, the 18-year-old denied Andre Dike at point-blank range before extending his right boot to keep out a low attempt from Chuk Obi, as part of a double chance that came to nothing, moments later.

In between those assaults on our goal came one that Byrne-Hughes could do nothing about: a curling effort from Jethro Medine that our stopper was thankful to see crash behind off the crossbar, having been left rooted to the spot.

At the other end, Ajayi was keeping the visitors honest with another nice piece of skill and shot that was taken behind by a deflection, as United looked for a late winner.

As we did, West Ham attempted to exploit the space that opened up on the break but, after a powerful sprint down the right wing, Dike lifted his eventual try over the bar. That was shortly before the referee’s whistle signalled 30 extra minutes would be needed to separate the teams.

Byrne-Hughes made a number of important saves after half-time.

EXTRA-TIME - REDS BOOK FINAL SPOT

Rooney was introduced from the bench at the start of the additional period and went close to putting us ahead in the opening 15 minutes.

Ajayi threaded a pass through with the outside of his boot that Rooney did well to latch on to, in behind the West Ham defence. He managed to stay on his feet while rounding Hooper but was forced wide and couldn’t quite direct his shot on target from a tight angle.

Byrne-Hughes was then equal to another Dike attempt just before the extra-time interval, impressively palming the West Ham man’s latest go at goal around his near post.

That save proved even more important after the quick turnaround for the second half. Within two minutes of the restart, substitute Douka Nkoto – on fresh after the brief hiatus – picked out Brown on the right flank, who faked to shoot before coming inside on his left and brilliantly curling the ball into the far bottom corner.

After a goalline clearance from Armer, United extended a precious one-goal lead just three minutes on from Brown establishing it. Rooney’s clever one-two with fellow sub James McEvoy had the former bearing down on goal, before he sealed the tie with a calm left-footed finish into the bottom corner.
