Under-23s hit six again in 10-goal thriller

Friday 05 February 2021 21:15

Manchester United's youngsters scored six times for the second Premier League 2 game in succession, as Neil Wood's boys roared back from 4-2 down to sink leaders Blackburn Rovers 6-4.

On the back of a 6-3 victory at Liverpool at the weekend, new recruit Amad provided three assists and added the final goal himself but Shola Shoretire earned the match-ball with a hat-trick, with Hannibal and Joe Hugill also getting on the scoresheet.

It was another breathtaking performance by the Reds, who are becoming essential viewing at the moment.

United were missing several key players through injury and loans which included erstwhile ever-present skipper Will Fish. This promised to be a good contest and it didn’t take long to live up to its billing.

Just 13 minutes into the game, Rovers took the lead when an uncharacteristic mistake by Dylan Levitt allowed striker Connor McBride to fire past Ondrej Mastny.

Goals, at both ends, have been in plentiful supply in recent games and we looked to be heading down the same road again when, seven minutes later, United’s French starlet Hannibal put his side on terms with a fabulous finish. The midfielder capped a fine move by twistingand turning and unleashing a fierce shot past Jordan Eastham. The goals continued to flow and, in the 32nd minute, Rovers regained the lead when their captain Samuel Barnes headed home from Luke Brennan’s corner.

The visitors were looking dangerous in attack but it was United who claimed the first half’s final goal which had its roots in Hannibal’s splendid raking pass which landed perfectly for Amad, who set-up Shoretire to whip home.

After the break, McBride scored his second of the game, from the penalty spot after Reece Devine was harshly penalised, and, when Joe Nolan touched in number four for the visitors from close range, the game looked up for United.

However, the response was outstanding as Amad was denied by a good stop by Eastham before the floodgates opened. Shoretire headed in an Amad centre and, within seconds, we were all-square again thanks to Hugill's nod of approval to a cross by raiding right-back Harvey Neville.

Amad and Shola Shoretire proved too hot for the leaders to handle.

The home side were far from done as Shoretire stabbed us in front for the first time, when teed up expertly by Amad, who kept his composure inside a crowded box.

When Amad scored himself, sweeping in a firm finish beyond Eastham's dive, the comeback was complete.

This was superb stuff again from Wood's side and a fabulous game of football at Leigh Sports Village for those watching live on MUTV.
