United drawn away against Yeovil Town in FA Cup

Monday 08 January 2018 19:30

Manchester United have been drawn away to Yeovil Town in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup. All ties will be played between Friday 26 and Monday 29 January 2018.

Currently occupying 21st place in League Two, Yeovil are the lowest-ranked club left in the competition. They hosted the Reds at Huish Park as recently as January 2015 when goals from Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera secured a 2-0 away win in the third round.

The only other meetings between the Reds and the Glovers also resulted in victories for United - 3-0 at home in the third round of 1937/38 and 8-0, the club's record FA Cup win, at home in the fifth round of 1948/49. That historic game was staged at Manchester City's old Maine Road ground, as Old Trafford was still being repaired following bomb damage during the war.

The fourth-round draw was made by former Reds defender Rio Ferdinand and ex-Wimbledon star Dennis Wise on Monday evening, prior to the start of the final third-round tie between Premier League clubs Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.

United have a good opportunity to equal the record number of FA Cup triumphs this season, given that the holders Arsenal, the only team to have won the trophy more times (13 to the Reds' 12), have been knocked out. Sunday's 4-2 loss at Championship club Nottingham Forest caused the Gunners to exit the cup in the third round for the first time since 1995/96, the season before Arsene Wenger became their manager.

The other top-flight clubs eliminated from the FA Cup at the weekend were Burnley (lost 4-1 at Manchester City), Everton (lost 2-1 at Liverpool) and Old Trafford's next visitors Stoke City (lost 2-1 at Coventry City). However, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Leicester City, Swansea City and West Ham United must all win third-round replays if they are to join the likes of United and Tottenham in the fourth round.
