Ella Toone awarded an MBE in King's Honours List

Tuesday 30 December 2025 08:42

It has been announced that Manchester United Women's Ella Toone will receive an MBE as part of the New Year's Honours list for 2026.

Tooney is among a number of England Women players and staff that have been recognised following their success at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.

That includes an honorary DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for manager Sarina Wiegman, a title which is only awarded to foreign nationals for services to the UK or for international achievement.

Lionesses captain Leah Williamson has been honoured with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire).

There are also MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) awards for a further four members of the England squad in Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Toone.

Ella has said: “To be awarded an MBE is an incredible honour and something I’m deeply proud of.

“Representing England and being part of a team that has won the Euros twice has helped change the landscape of women’s football, these memories will stay with me forever. Those achievements mean everything to me.

“This recognition is also incredibly personal because I want to dedicate it to my dad, who I lost to prostate cancer last year. He was my biggest supporter, from the very first kick of a ball, and I know he’d be so proud.

“Continuing to raise my profile, I want to help raise awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection, and to give back by helping inspire the next generation through the ET7 Academy.

“If sharing my story can encourage people to have conversations, get checked, or support young players coming through, then that would mean just as much to me as anything I’ve achieved on the pitch.”

Congratulations, Ella. Everybody at Manchester United is so, so proud of you.

The King’s New Year Honours List 2026 recognises 1,157 recipients, including well-known figures from entertainment, sport, music, literature and charity.

Among the most high-profile names is Idris Elba, who will receive a knighthood for services to young people.

Christopher Dean and Jayne Christensen (Torvill) are also being honoured, with a knighthood and damehood respectively, for their services to ice skating and voluntary work.

Cynthia Erivo receives an MBE for her contribution to music and drama.
