Are these Lindelof's best United performances?

Tuesday 14 June 2022 12:59

To celebrate his five-year anniversary as a United player, Victor Lindelof recently sat down with us to discuss some of his most memorable displays as a Red so far.

The Sweden captain signed from Benfica back in the summer of 2017, and has been one of the mainstays of our defence during the time since.

Lindelof finished the 2021/22 season on 196 total appearances for the club and he is just four away from becoming one of the select few players to reach a double century of United appearances.

All being well, Victor will tick off that milestone early in 2022/23. But let's park the future for now: how does the centre-back reflect on his time at Old Trafford so far? And does he agree with the five games that we've selected as his most memorable in Red?

On the five-year anniversary of Victor Lindelof's arrival, he talks through his most memorable matches as a pro...

THE OLD TRAFFORD DEBUT (v Basel, 2017)

“Playing in the Champions League with a club like United, and at a stadium like Old Trafford, was obviously a dream come true for me.  As an experience it was amazing. I'd been playing in the Champions League for a few games [with Benfica], so I knew how to approach those games as well. It was a great feeling for me to be able to help the team out there, and to make my first game at Old Trafford was also amazing.”
A DOMINANT PERFORMANCE AGAINST ARSENAL (2018)

“I remember that game, and I remember Fellaini's goal. My memory isn't the best, but I think I performed quite good in that game and, like always, I was happy to be out there on the pitch and playing in front of my fans, helping the team win. To beat Arsenal is also great, and if you picked up [on my performance] then I must have performed well!”

CONQUERING THE ETIHAD (v Manchester City, 2019)

“Like always, it's always a tough game playing against them. They're a very, very good team. I remember it being a tight game and tough game [United won 2-1]. Especially during those games, you really, really need to be focused. If you don't focus for a few seconds, something can happen and they can score. Usually after games, of course, you're tired in your legs. But you're also mentally very tired, because you need to be focused. But I think we performed well as a team in that game; we really had a very good team spirit. We managed to get the three points which is always important for us. So a good game.”

HIS 100TH UNITED APEARANCE (v Club Brugge, 2020)

“To be honest, I didn't know I was to close to 200 [United appearances] but I think that shows that I've been consistent throughout my time at the club. It's a great number, hopefully I can play many more games and help the team to success. To play 100 games is amazing, and I'm very happy and proud to compete at this level and to play this many games at this club and this level. It's very proud, and I've been working for it for a long time.”

SHINING AT THE SAN SIRO (v Milan, 2021)

“I always prepare the same for every game, and I think that's very, very important, even if you're playing in the league, or in a cup game or a European tie. It's very important to prepare in the same way, because the level that you're playing at is very, very high. You're playing against very good teams and players, so you always have to be ready for anything. I remember that game. We played well, and I think I performed well, so I was very happy for the win and for the clean sheet as well.”
