Vote for United's Player of the Month

Thursday 30 August 2018 07:00

It has been a difficult start to the season for Manchester United but we are still seeking our first Player of the Month of the 2018/19 campaign.

As always, fans get the chance to vote for their star man, from a shortlist compiled by club journalists.

Based on performances in the opening three fixtures of the Premier League – the win over Leicester City and defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur – our three contenders are Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Fred, for the reasons we'll outline below.

FRED – 3 appearances, 0 goals

The Brazilian has already earned plenty of respect from the United faithful for his energy and ability to drive the team forward. Jose has spoken of the midfielder's influence, on and off the pitch, and it is clear he has the potential to make a real mark at Old Trafford. An all-action display earned an ovation from the crowd when he was substituted on his debut against Leicester and he also worked hard, with little reward, against Spurs when managing to fire a shot wide in the opening seconds of the 3-0 reverse.

Fred has already demonstrated his ability to drive forward from midfield.

LUKE SHAW – 3 appearances, 1 goal

The left-back is a popular nominee for August's prize after an impressive opening to the season on a personal level. He capped a fine display during the game against Leicester with his first goal for the club, which proved to be the eventual winner against the Foxes, and could also hold his head high despite the two defeats since that Old Trafford triumph. Certainly, his contribution against Spurs suggested he did not deserve to be on the losing side and his positive contribution was acknowledged by Jose Mourinho afterwards. Could this be the first time he lands our Player of the Month accolade?

PAUL POGBA – 3 appearances, 2 goals

The World Cup winner was happy to return to action with little pre-season training under his belt as he skippered the side in the 2-1 victory over Leicester, earning our Man-of-the-Match award in the process. A clinical penalty past Kasper Schmeichel was our first goal of 2018/19 and he repeated the feat from 12 yards at Brighton, even if it was always going to be little more than a consolation. Although admitting he was not at his best at the Amex Stadium, he warrants recognition for his efforts against the Foxes and did go close with one shot from outside the box in the loss to Tottenham. Hopefully, there is much more to come from him – starting at Burnley on Sunday.

Voting will close on Sunday at 14:00 BST, with the winner being announced early next week on ManUtd.com and in the new Manchester United Official App.
