Was Zigiotti’s goal v Leicester a cross or shot?

Julia Zigiotti opened the scoring in Manchester United Women’s 2-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday and has since been voted by fans as our Player of the Match.

Zigiotti topped the post-match poll in the United App and on ManUtd.com with 38 per cent of selections, to finish ahead of fellow nominees Phallon Tullis-Joyce (28 per cent), Dominique Janssen (20 per cent) and midfield partner Hinata Miyazawa (13 per cent).

The Sweden midfielder nudged the Reds ahead in the 13th minute and later assisted substitute Elisabeth Terland’s points-sealing strike, two minutes from the end of normal time.

But did she mean to score with her effort in the first half? Our no.18 looked to be trying to find Lea Schuller in the penalty box, with a curling ball that found its way into the Leicester net without a deviating touch from the German forward.

Julia Zigiotti and Phallon Tullis-Joyce talk to Ben Ibson about another clean sheet and win for United, at Leicester...

“It was supposed to be a cross for Lea, but I’m happy it went in,” Julia honourably admitted, speaking to MUTV’s Ben Ibson at full-time.

On the game, our no.18 added: “They [Leicester] made it difficult for us, but I also think it’s up to us, we need to be cleaner on the ball and more composed around the box. It’s a nice win.”
Zigiotti now has three goals in United’s last five matches, having opened her WSL account straight from a corner against Aston Villa a fortnight ago, one week after notching against Burnley in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

Remarkably, the Burnley effort was the defence-minded midfielder’s first in 24 appearances for the Reds, and she has now hit a rich vein of attacking form, which has also seen her provide assists in each of our last two games.

“She is [playing with confidence], and we often speak about how important Ziggi is to the defensive part of our game, but when she came to Manchester United, I challenged her to be the aggressor, be better with the ball,” Skinner told MUTV post-match on Saturday.

“Not to be better because her quality is not there, but because it is there and we need to see it. That challenge is paying off.

“I really think [in] this second part of the season, she’s really kicked on a gear. The ball [for her goal] is beautiful, if it’s an inch lower Lea heads it in. It’s a perfect ball and she absolutely deserved that.

“I want that to continue and that’s my challenge to her.”
