Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jurgen Klopp on the touchline during Manchester United v Liverpool.

What's going on at United this week?

Monday 14 October 2019 08:00

International football may currently be in full swing, but the return of the Premier League this weekend means there’s still plenty happening at the club.

The Reds host our old rivals Liverpool this Sunday, while our Under-18s and Women’s side are also in action over the coming seven days.

Here’s a full break down of everything going on at United this week…

MONDAY
Three United players could feature for Gareth Southgate’s England, as they travel to Bulgaria for a Euro 2020 qualifier (kick-off 19:45). Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire, who have been vital components of the Three Lions set-up over the last couple of years, have been selected in the squad, as has our young on-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Victor Lindelof and David De Gea will be on opposing sides on international duty this week.

TUESDAY

We’ll be wishing a very happy birthday to former Red Andy Cole, who turns 48 on this day. The striker spent seven years at Old Trafford and made 275 appearances for United, netting 121 times, including 24 in our Treble-winning campaign of 1998/99.

The last game featuring United players from the current round of international fixtures sees two Reds lock horns when David De Gea’s Spain take on Victor Lindelof’s Sweden in a crucial Euro 2020 qualifier. The clash at the Friends Arena in Stockholm - which played host to our 2017 Europa League final victory over Ajax - kicks off at 19:45 BST. Earlier that evening, youngster Tahith Chong could play for the Netherlands Under-21 side when they face Norway Under-21s at 17:30 BST.

WEDNESDAY

It's 20 years to the day since United beat Watford 4-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford en route to our sixth Premier League title. Denis Irwin and Dwight Yorke managed a goal each, but the star of the show was Cole, who struck a brace just a day after turning 28.

THURSDAY
The end of the international break means the Reds will be back in training ahead of this weekend’s game against Liverpool. United are unbeaten against the Merseysiders in our last six meetings at Old Trafford and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to keep this run going. The boss will no doubt be using this day to work on his tactical approach with his players at the Aon Training Complex.

FRIDAY
Ole will be hosting his weekly press conference ahead of the Liverpool game and he will likely give some indication as to who could feature against Jurgen Klopp's side. As always, the press conference will be broadcast on MUTV and updates will be provided in our Official App.

Elsewhere, Ethan Hamilton celebrates his 21st birthday and will be hoping to mark the occasion in style when loan club Southend United travel to Tranmere Rovers, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 BST.

There have been no shortage of classic encounters when we've faced our historic rivals Liverpool down the years...

SATURDAY
Neil Ryan’s Under-18s begin a busy weekend of football when they host Middlesbrough at the Aon Training Complex at 12:30 BST. The Reds won our last outing - a 5-2 victory over Newcastle United - and will be aiming for a similarly emphatic victory over the Magpies’ North-East rivals.

SUNDAY
Our Women’s side host Manchester City in just the second-ever Manchester derby. The game also sees United kick off our FA Women's Continental League Cup campaign, a tournament we reached the semi-final of last year. This time around, Casey Stoney’s side have been drawn against Everton, Leicester City and Birmingham City, as well as City, in the five-team group. This weekend’s clash at Leigh Sports Village begins at 12:00 BST.

Our second derby of the day takes place at Old Trafford, where United take on Liverpool in the Premier League (16:30 BST kick-off). There’s nothing our supporters enjoy more than a win over the Merseysiders and three points for Ole’s men could see us cut the gap to our top-four rivals.
