Friday 01 December 2023 15:30

The draw for the third round of the Emirates FA Cup is, traditionally, an exciting one as the top clubs enter the famous old competition at this stage.

Manchester United went all the way to the final in last season's competition, losing 2-1 to Manchester City at Wembley.

We last lifted the trophy in 2016, when Jesse Lingard's extra-time volley earned a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, ensuring a 12th triumph in the tournament, with only Arsenal winning it more often.

The second-round ties are taking place across the weekend, even through until Monday night, when AFC Wimbledon take on Ramsgate.

However, the draw is being held on Sunday, around 12:55 GMT, during ITV's build-up to their live coverage of the Eastleigh versus Reading fixture.

United will be ball no.24 in the hat, and the games will be played around the weekend of 6 and 7 January.

In the ties played on Saturday, the biggest shock was Maidstone United beating Barrow 2-1. The National League South side have reached the third round for the first time since they were reformed in 1992.

Gillingham knocked Charlton Athletic out, winning 2-0, but Horsham's adventure was ended by Sutton United.

There was also a big draw held in Hamburg on Saturday, for the Euro 2024 finals, with the group stages being unveiled.

Look out for our coverage of the third-round draw on Sunday afternoon.
