Former Reds on the move in summer transfer window

When players leave Manchester United, they all follow different paths that can lead to them plying their trade in some particularly exotic locations.

Over the years, we have seen David Beckham in Spain, the USA, Italy and France, as well as fellow Academy graduates Gerard Pique and Adnan Januzaj swap Manchester for sunnier climes.

Others may choose to remain closer to home, while players who did not necessarily come through our youth system have also made moves to interesting - and perhaps unexpected - places since they departed Old Trafford.

Following the 2023 summer transfer window, the list of former Reds playing across the globe has continued to evolve, and you can read below where the likes of Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Daley Blind - to name a few - will play their football this season...

Edinson Cavani scored 19 goals in 59 appearances for United between 2020 and 2022.

Edinson Cavani completed a move to Argentina Primera Division champions Boca Juniors in July, having spent one season in La Liga with Valencia.

The Uruguayan links up with fellow ex-Reds Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero in Buenos Aires, with the former of the Argentinian duo captaining the side.

Juan Mata is another ex-United player who was on the move this summer, trading Turkish side Galatasaray - one of our upcoming Champions League opponents - for J1 League outfit Vissel Kobe, in Japan.

Mata follows fellow Spaniard Andres Iniesta in playing for the club, with the former Barcelona man having departed for UAE side Emirates a month prior.

One of Mata's former team-mates, Nemanja Matic, spent one season with Roma in Serie A, under the tutelage of ex-United manager Jose Mourinho, before moving to French team Rennes this summer.

The Serbian earned a spot in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season last term, and will compete in the tournament once more with the Ligue 1 side during the 2023/24 campaign.

Daley Blind is another Red who sought pastures new ahead of 2023/24, signing a contract with La Liga outfit Girona, after spending last season at Ajax and Bayern Munich.

Former Reds Ashley Young and Will Keane were also both on the move in the summer transfer window.

Young, having ended his second stint at Aston Villa, will now ply his trade at Goodison Park while Keane transferred to Preston North End from Wigan Athletic following a three-year stint with the Latics.

Keane has started 2023/24 in fine form too, scoring four goals in his first five league appearances for the side he played on loan at - while he was a United player - back in 2015.

Craig Cathcart won our Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award back in 2007 and while he will be more recognised by many football fans for his nine-year stay at Watford, he is a product of the Reds' youth system.

Cathcart completed a move from Vicarage Road to Belgian First Division side K.V. Kortrijk this summer.

Academy graduate Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and former young Red Jacob Carney round off our list, with the former swapping League One Burton Albion for Polish club Slask Wroclaw, while the latter has moved to Spanish third-tier side Castellon.
