FA Cup final: Who did fans vote for as United's best player?

Saturday 03 June 2023 19:20

Manchester United's players put in one more battling performance of a marathon campaign on Saturday, before eventually succumbing to a slender 2-1 defeat by Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

In the team's 62nd game of the season, Erik ten Hag's men were rocked after just 13 seconds by Ilkay Gundogan scoring the fastest goal in FA Cup final history.

But far from caving in against the recently crowned Premier League champions, the Reds rallied, shut down 52-goal Erling Haaland and deservedly drew level by half-time through Bruno Fernandes's penalty - correctly awarded by VAR for handball by Jack Grealish.

United also created chances to score in open play, with decent opportunities falling to Marcus Rashford and second-half substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

Scott McTominay also came off the bench and had one of two headers that came agonisingly close to giving us a second equaliser and forcing extra-time, with Raphael Varane providing the other.
Joining the Frenchman in United's back four were Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the latter again showing why his second half of the season had MUTV pundit Ben Thornley tipping him for Player of the Year.

Casemiro and his Brazil team-mate Fred anchored the midfield, while Christian Eriksen operated further forward in a front four with Fernandes, Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

Ten Hag used 14 players in all across the afternoon; Wout Weghorst was the other substitute he called upon, between Garnacho and McTominay, as his side tried in vain to find a second goal in the game.

POST-MATCH POLL

Despite our defeat, the team's performance in coming from behind to battle City all the way to the final whistle merited praise and we therefore asked fans to vote for the player who impressed them the most.

The outcome of our poll was reasonably close with no fewer than four players sharing almost three-quarters (74 per cent) of the vote. In fourth place was Casemiro (12 per cent) and Wan-Bissaka was just ahead of him in third (14 per cent).

The top two were Garnacho (19 per cent) and the eventual poll winner Fernandes (29 per cent), who spoke on behalf of the squad when he told BBC Sport: "The disappointment in the dressing room is also because we couldn’t [do] the job for the fans that they really deserve."

Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll you can see below.
