Fixtures: Who do we play around our European games?

Thursday 16 June 2022 09:00

Manchester United’s 2022/23 Premier League fixtures have been released in full this (Thursday) morning, with the schedule for Erik ten Hag’s first season starting to take shape.

The Reds will face Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the new campaign, in the first of five fixtures set to take place in August.

The dates and times of all league matches after matchday one are still subject to change however, and we are likely to see several alterations to the Reds’ schedule due to our participation in Europe.

Our Europa League campaign kicks off in early September and while we won’t know our group-stage opponents until the draw later this summer, we are now aware of who we will be playing around the six matchdays which have already been set in stone.

The provisional dates for our 38 league games in 2022/23 have been released.

MATCHDAY ONE: 8 SEPTEMBER

Before: Arsenal (H), 03/09/2022
After: Crystal Palace (A), 10/09/2022

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will be our sixth Premier League opponents of the new campaign before the focus switches to European matters for the first time this season. Our opening group-stage game will take place on Thursday 8 September, with a trip to Crystal Palace on the following weekend therefore likely to be pushed back to the Sunday or Monday.
MATCHDAY TWO: 15 SEPTEMBER

Before: Crystal Palace (A), 10/09/2022
After: Leeds United (H), 17/09/2022

Off the back of that visit to Selhurst Park, the Reds are set to compete in the Europa League in back-to-back weeks. A return to Old Trafford and a reunion with Leeds United will follow on from our matchday two fixture in mid-September.

MATCHDAY THREE: 6 OCTOBER

Before: Manchester City (A), 01/10/2022
After: Everton (A), 08/10/2022

Our European campaign resumes in October following the first Manchester derby of the season on the opening weekend of the autumn month. United’s matchday three outing will be sandwiched between short away trips in fact, with the journey over to Merseyside to take on Everton set for the weekend after.
MATCHDAY FOUR: 13 OCTOBER

Before: Everton (A), 08/10/2022
After: Newcastle United (H), 15/10/2022

We will play two Europa League games in the space of a week for the second time in the season in early October. After that away game to Everton, United will return to European competition before switching the focus back to league matters, and a visit to M16 from Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.

MATCHDAY FIVE: 27 OCTOBER

Before: Chelsea (A), 22/10/2022
After: West Ham United (H), 29/10/2022

Later in October, matchday five is preceded by a trip to Stamford Bridge before West Ham United are the visitors to the Theatre of Dreams in the days after. The Reds were 1-0 winners in the latter fixture in 2021/22, courtesy of a stoppage-time decider from Marcus Rashford.

Our 26 December fixture is going to be hotly anticipated by both sides involved.

MATCHDAY SIX: 3 NOVEMBER

Before: West Ham United (H), 29/10/2022
After: Aston Villa (A), 05/11/2022

After that visit from the Hammers, we will round off our Europa League group-stage campaign in early November – due to the winter World Cup – before facing Aston Villa at Villa Park. That trip to the Midlands is our penultimate league fixture prior to the start of the international tournament later that month.
