Who was United's Man of the Match?

Thursday 09 March 2023 23:15

Manchester United swept aside La Liga outfit Real Betis 4-1 at Old Trafford, in the first leg of our Europa League round-of-16 tie.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst capped an impressive display from Erik ten Hag's side, as the Reds found the net three times in the second half in M16.

Rashford's stunning opener after just six minutes set the tone early on and despite Ayoze Perez's leveller for Betis after 32 minutes played, United were relentless in the second half and we've given ourselves a solid foundation to build upon ahead of next week's second leg in Seville.

Lots of players proved their worth across the 90 minutes, bouncing back in the best way possible after our disappointing defeat on Merseyside at the weekend, but just who claimed our Man of the Match award?

One Red emerged at the top of the voting by quite the margin in the end, with Fernandes receiving a whopping 49 per cent.

The Portugal international was once again key to most of the good Ten Hag's men did across the 90 minutes, whether that be winning back possession high up the pitch, popping up in pockets of space to help dictate the play, or heading United into a 3-1 lead.

With the game still hanging in the balance, Bruno connected wonderfully with Luke Shaw's cross before peeling away to celebrate in sheer delight in front of the Stretford End.

He also registered an assist for Antony's curling effort that gave us the lead shortly after the second half had resumed, as he picked up the ball in the middle of midfield, before gifting it to our no.21 who did the rest in trademark fashion.

It capped a strong display all-in-all from Fernandes, with no one making more key passes than his five across the entirety of the game against Manuel Pellegrini's side.

The next player in our polling was Weghorst, with our Dutch forward collecting 15 per cent of the total vote.

The Reds will take a commanding lead to Spain for the second leg of our Europa League last-16 tie.

Our no.27 slotted home from inside the area and wheeled away to celebrate only his second goal for club, on what was a strong display overall from the 30-year-old.

Rashford received a strong 12 per cent of votes and came in third place, with our in-form forward finding the net for the 26th time this season.

But it was Fernandes's award overall, and that is reflected in our poll, making him Man of the Match this evening.

Congratulations, Bruno!
