Who was Man of the Match against Newport?

Sunday 28 January 2024 19:30

Manchester United advanced to the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup thanks to a 4-2 win over Newport County at Rodney Parade.

A number of Reds made key contributions to the victory – including Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, whose early goals gave us a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes.

But after Newport pegged the scoreline back to 2-2 with strikes either side of half-time, our resilience to go again proved just as important in the second half with Antony and Rasmus Hojlund getting on the scoresheet to ensure our progress in the competition.

The four scorers were not alone in making an impact on proceedings, with the returning Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Casemiro also catching the eye as they all started on their respective returns from injury.

But, who have our supporters voted as the club's official Man of the Match following our first-ever competitive fixture against the Exiles? Read on to find out…

After netting the opening goal of the contest, Fernandes was the Red to take the overall acclaim of fans voting in our Man of the Match poll on ManUtd.com and in the United App.

The Reds captain took 33 per cent of the vote, having been a thorn in Newport’s side all afternoon – providing his usual energy, determination and flair in midfield and, indeed, all over the pitch.

He was followed in the voting by Kobbie Mainoo, who was the selected player for one quarter of fans voting in our poll.

Mainoo continued his positive form in midfield, and impressed as he partnered Casemiro for the first time in the engine room – not to mention the cultured finish he placed into the bottom-left corner for his first senior United goal, and our second strike of the afternoon.

There was also deserved acknowledgement for Antony. The Brazilian finished third in the poll, with 15 per cent of the vote, after providing a brilliant assist for Fernandes’ opener and netting the all-important third goa in the second half to reinstate our advantage.

Trailing just behind them were Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, with seven and six per cent respectively, but Fernandes was ultimately the fans’ clear winner.

Congratulations on another great display, Bruno!
