Who won Man of the Match against Crystal Palace?

Tuesday 26 September 2023 22:42

When Erik ten Hag named his Manchester United starting XI to face Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, there was the opportunity for a number of Reds to make their mark.

Alejandro Garnacho, who wasn't used in the win at Burnley on Saturday, opened the scoring with a controlled finish, before Casemiro doubled the lead before the break with a powerful header.

Anthony Martial added a third in the second half with well-taken half-volley to put the result beyond any doubt.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Facundo Pellistri, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat all looked bright during the time they were on the pitch, but it was our second goalscorer and assister of the third strike who emerged at the top of our Man of the Match poll with a convincing 64 per cent of the vote.

Casemiro put in one of his vintage all-action performances, breaking up play brilliantly and shielding the defence superbly, and also got his name on the scoresheet again.

The Brazilian rose high to pummel a header beyond the helpless Sam Johnstone in the Palace goal to register his fourth of the season and make it 2-0 in the first half and commanded the midfield from start to finish.

Add to that his pinpoint cross for Martial's goal, and it is no surprise that our no.18 stood out among the crowd against the Eagles.

Runner-up to Casemiro was Garnacho, with 11 per cent, after returning to the United starting XI with a goal.

The Argentina international kept his cool to slot beyond Johnstone in the first half, with Rob Holding unable to keep it out on the line, and always looked a threat on the left-hand side, controlling the ball with ease and making it a very long evening for the Palace defence.

The only other Red to hit double-figures (also 11 per cent) was summer arrival Amrabat, who made his full debut in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

There was much to admire about our new no.4, as he displayed authority, tenacity and versatility.

Initially at left-back and looking focused and composed in equal measure, the Morocco international moved into his more customary midfield role following the half-time substitution of Mount.

Alongside Casemiro, Amrabat helped the Reds continue to control possession and stem any sniffs of a counter-attack from Roy Hodgson's men.

But following our fan vote, Casemiro, beyond any doubt, is our Man of the Match for the clash against Palace. Congratulations, Case!
