Cristiano Ronaldo

Why Ronaldo gave his shirt to a steward in Bern

Cristiano Ronaldo made a goalscoring return for Manchester United in Europe, even if the Reds eventually fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in Switzerland.

Ronaldo connected with Bruno Fernandes’s pinpoint pass to put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men ahead after 13 minutes and it was a record-extending 135th Champions League goal for the 36-year-old.

Our no.7 also equalled the competition record for appearances, tying Iker Casillas on 177, on another noteworthy night for him personally, although the Swiss side came back to win through goals from Moumi Ngamaleu and Jordan Siebatcheu after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's sending off.

Ronaldo's stray shot struck the steward during the warm-up.

Cristiano’s match-worn United adidas away shirt will, however, still make for an impressive souvenir.

It eventually ended up with a female steward at the stadium, after a great gesture by our recently returned forward.

Ronaldo struck the member of security staff in the head with a stray shot prior to the Group F clash, leading to her requiring medical attention.

After seeing the steward in distress, Cristiano leaped the barrier to check that she was okay, as you can see in the Tweet posted by DAZN Canada below.

United’s team of doctors were also in attendance after the nasty-looking injury.

Fortunately, the steward appeared to make a full recovery and Ronaldo sought her out after the game to give her the jersey.

As you can see from the image above, she looked happy enough to receive it!

United’s Champions League campaign continues in two weeks' time, when Villarreal visit Old Trafford on Wednesday 29 September (20:00 BST kick-off).

The Spanish side were held to a 2-2 draw by Atalanta in the other Group F game, with the Italians levelling late on through Robin Gosens.
