Scott McTominay

Could McTominay play a key role against Newcastle?

On Tuesday evening, when perusing Twitter as usual, I stumbled across a compilation video of a young Scott McTominay – then wearing no.9 for our youth side – finishing chances with ease.

Then a boisterous Academy prospect with a wealth of potential, now a first-team regular who occupies a deeper position to that of his youth, Scott displayed that same goalscoring prowess for Scotland over the recent international break.

McTominay notched twice for Steve Clarke’s side off the bench against Cyprus, and then again after starting versus Spain, as the Tartan Army raced to the top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group.

Our flying Scotsman, like the rest of the Reds representing their national sides, will return to Carrington imminently ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match away to Newcastle.

Scott nets a brace for the second time in the international break on a memorable night for his nation.

With Casemiro serving the second fixture of his four-match suspension and Marcel Sabitzer appearing to be a doubt for the trip to Tyneside, it leaves just Fred and the 26-year-old Academy graduate as our remaining senior central midfielders.

Yes, Bruno Fernandes has been deployed in the deeper role in previous matches by Erik ten Hag and Sabitzer was still on the bench in Austria’s second Euro qualifier, but surely there is no United player returning from the international break in higher spirits than Scott.

McTominay has hit form at just the right time; just when the door has opened for him to stake his claim for a starting spot in the Reds' line-up.

What’s more, United travel up to an intimidating St. James' Park, where a buoyant Newcastle will be aiming to avenge February's Carabao Cup final defeat to Ten Hag’s team.

Grit and determination will be key, and these are qualities that Scott possesses in abundance.

The match against the Magpies begins yet another busy period of fixtures for the Reds, and a host of matches where McTominay will hope to play a key role.
