Marcus now has five United goals in Spain, including two at Barcelona and Real Betis this season...

Rashford – with 27 United goals now to his name this term – earned a 47 per cent majority share of the voting, beating Casemiro and Facundo Pellistri to the award, who had a 15 per cent and 10 per cent share, respectively.

After a tricky first half that ended level, in which both sides had opportunities to open the scoring, Rashford and his team-mates came out of the blocks quickly after the half-time restart.

Our no.10 looked especially lively, and was twice set up by Bruno Fernandes early in the second half – first drawing a save from goalkeeper Rui Silva and then shooting over from a promising position – before he netted the decisive goal.

There was no doubting the quality of his strike third time around when he fired into the bottom right corner from 20 yards on 56 minutes, which proved to be the deciding moment of our second-leg victory.

Rashford was withdrawn five minutes later by manager Erik ten Hag, ensuring his night’s work was done, with an eye perhaps on our next test, against Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday, back at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the game in Andalusia, Ten Hag commended Rashford’s mentality to keep going after he had missed two great chances.

The Reds are into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, thanks to a 5-1 aggregate victory.

“I think he missed two big chances but then he can deal with that,” said the Dutchman. “That is important for a striker, you can deal with [the fact that] not every chance can be a goal.

“He will always be in the position he can score and he has to be focused on that. He keeps trying and he got his reward. It tells you something about the team performance and something about him [his goal record].

“We have discussed a lot about the issue from the start of the season: if Rashy keeps his focus and makes sure he has the energy, the way we play, the way he has to play in that system and style, he will come into scoring positions and then it's about him. He has the abilities to finish.”

Erik congratulates Marcus after his match-winning goal at Estadio Benito Villamarin.
