Ronaldo wins Premier League Goal of the Month

Friday 01 April 2022 13:00

Cristiano Ronaldo's opening goal from his hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur has been named the Premier League's Goal of the Month for March 2022.

Cristiano was up against seven other players for this month's gong, including the likes of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Ruben Neves, with the final decision being put to fans in a vote on the Premier League's website.

Although Ronaldo netted a treble in the clash with our top-four rivals to secure a vital three points, it was his first goal which caught the eye and made the league's shortlist.

Cristiano opened the scoring in some style during Saturday's win over Tottenham...

Raphael Varane played the ball forward and Fred teed up Ronaldo with a neat flick-on, before the 37-year-old thrashed a shot into the top corner beyond the despairing dive of the visitors’ keeper Hugo Lloris.

The unstoppable long-range strike drew our no.7 level with Josef Bican's record as the all-time top scorer in men's professional football - a mark which, of course, Ronaldo would go on to surpass later in the half.

Cristiano is no stranger to finding the net but this is the first time he has claimed the Premier League's official award as it was only introduced at the beginning of the 2016/17 season.

United players have now won it on six occasions, tying with Chelsea, as Ronaldo adds his name to a list also containing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Antonio Valencia, Bruno Fernandes (twice) and Edinson Cavani.

Ronaldo has also claimed two United Goal of the Month accolades this season, for his strike at Tottenham in October and last month's rasping shot against Brighton.

Cristiano, who was also recently named our Player of the Month for March, currently has 18 goals in 32 games after making a shock return to United in summer.
