United Women report for pre-season training

Manchester United Women's players reported back to Carrington on Monday for the first time since the end of the 2022/23 season.

Pre-season training is back under way ahead of the new season, which starts on 1 October away at Aston Villa.

Players who have featured in the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer will not return to training until September.

These players include Canada duo Jayde Riviere and Adriana Leon, as well as Norway's Vilde Boe Risa.

Reds stars Katie Zelem, Mary Earps and Ella Toone have all featured for England's Lionesses so far this summer, with Zelem and Earps featuring in the penalty shootout win over Nigeria in the last 16.

Training saw defender Gemma Evans join up for the first time since signing earlier in the summer.

The Welsh international arrived at United from Reading on a permanent deal and joins fellow compatriot Hayley Ladd in Manchester.

Also joining training was Keira Barry, who was back with the first team for the first time since signing her professional contract last week.

It was also great to see Jess Simpson and Maria Thorisdottir back on the training pitches following injuries.

Simpson, who is coming back from a knee injury, was delighted to be back at a sunny Carrington.

"It's good to get back on the pitch," she told MUTV. "It feels like it's been ages since we have been here. It's good to get boots back on and start training again."

Jess Simpson and Safia Middleton-Patel come to the first training session of pre-season

In March, Thorisdottir sustained a long-term mid-foot injury which ruled her out for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

She has been doing physiotherapy back in Norway during the summer and is now back training with the team.

Marc Skinner's side, who will compete in the Champions League for the first time this season, will start our home campaign at Leigh Sports Village on 8 October against Arsenal.
