Erik ten Hag

Erik's team news update for Leeds away

Friday 10 February 2023 13:30

Erik ten Hag doesn’t expect to have any of his injured Manchester United players back for Sunday’s visit to Elland Road.

The Reds take on Leeds United once again, just four days after the exciting 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, where goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho salvaged a point after the visitors took a shock two-goal lead.

Sancho shone on his return to league action following a near four-month absence, while Marcel Sabitzer also made his full debut for the club.

Antony, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay were not involved during the clash with the Whites though, as the trio were ruled out through injury.

Erik assumes none of them will return in West Yorkshire, but he doesn’t believe that there will be any additional issues for his team ahead of Sunday's match.

“I don’t expect [them to be fit]. We have some days obviously, but I don't expect it,” Ten Hag told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“If I can oversee it from now, I don't see any new problems coming up.”

Ten Hag also added that the trio are even unlikely to play in Barcelona next Thursday, when the Reds resume our Europa League campaign: “I think same answer, I can’t say for 100 percent, but I don’t expect it.”

It remains to be seen whether Aaron Wan-Bissaka has recovered from the illness which kept him out of Wednesday’s game, although Diogo Dalot is back from his own fitness issues and made his first league start since November.

Casemiro will serve the second of his three-match suspension, while Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek are long-term injury absentees.

While Ten Hag didn't want to blame the hectic fixture schedule for any specific injury problems, he did highlight the general demands of the crowded calendar.

“With the injuries, if you see Christian Eriksen, you can't see that as an impact from the tough season, but it definitely is a tough season with the World Cup in between and a lot of overload for the players,” he added.

“That process is already longer term, going on that the load on the players is too much.”

LEEDS' TEAM NEWS

Co-caretaker boss Michael Skubala spoke to the media on Friday afternoon, confirming Pascal Struijk is out with concussion, suffered when being struck by a Marcus Rashford shot on Wednesday. However, he feels Luis Sinisterra, who also left the field early, could be okay to play.

Striker Rodrigo is definitely sidelined but Skubala said: "The long-term injuries are progressing well."

Marc Roca and Liam Cooper are still being assessed after missing out on the trip to Manchester.
