Galton is United Women’s Player of the Month

Leah Galton has been named Manchester United Women’s Player of the Month following a standout February.

In the fan-voted award for the month just gone, our left-winger was up against Hannah Blundell, Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner after the quartet helped the Reds to achieve an unbeaten run across the four weeks.

It turned out to be one of the closest polls we’ve ever seen for a Player of the Month award at United, with each nominee receiving over 20 per cent of the vote and just six per cent separating the winner from fourth place.

It was Galton who proved to be the pick of the bunch with 28 per cent, ahead of defensive trio Turner (26 per cent), Le Tissier (24) and Blundell (22).
Galton missed out on the first month of the new year for Marc Skinner’s side as she worked her way back from a small injury that kept her sidelined since the winter break. The boss wasted no time reintegrating her into the line-up, though, slotting back into her usual position for our clash with Everton.

Unfortunately, though, that game would end in a stalemate with neither side able to break the deadlock despite United’s plethora of chances in front of goal. The Toffees proved tough opponents to grind out a point in our own backyard.

Next up was a trip to the capital where we faced Tottenham Hotspur in a game that was decided in 10 frantic minutes. Galton, in her favoured left-wing position, opened the scoring for the Reds not long after the hour-mark. Moments later, however, Spurs forward Beth England levelled it with a long-range strike before mere seconds passed and Molly Bartrip skewed the ball into the back of her own net to restore our lead. Ella Toone’s red card late on – which was subsequently overturned – meant a difficult task seeing out the game, but Skinner’s side prevailed to pick up a crucial three points in a 2-1 win

The Reds saw out the month with a fight-round FA Cup clash with Durham. The Wildcats have been notoriously difficult opponents for us in the past, but Galton and her team-mates dispatched them 5-0 to secure a spot in the last eight of the competition, where we’ll face Lewes.

Our no.11 was on the scoresheet yet again, finishing off a sublime move from United. Katie Zelem’s searching ball over the top of the difference found Galton through the middle who stayed composed to lift the ball over the onrushing Durham keeper, Naoisha McAloon, and set us on our way.

Who is your United Women Player of the Month for February?

Galton is a stalwart of our attack and has been since the relaunch of our women’s team back in 2018; and she has even done her fair share of grafting at left-back in the past, too. She is now just three goals away from equaling her best-ever goal contribution tally in the WSL, currently sitting on five goals and three assists for the current campaign. As far as worthy winners go, she’s right up there for a standout February.

All four of our Player of the Month nominees for February will be back in action this weekend when we face Leicester at home, with tickets still available to buy at manutd.com/tickets

Congratulations on the award, Leah, and thank you to everyone who voted.
