Happy birthday Amad.

Amad reveals one of his biggest strengths

Sunday 11 July 2021 11:30

Manchester United fans have always loved players with dribbling ability and Amad has already shown glimpses of his quick footwork and trickery in his short time at the club.

The Ivory Coast international turns 19 today (Sunday), as the football world anticipates the Euro 2020 final at Wembley between England and the country he left to move to Manchester, Italy.

During an exclusive interview with club media, the youngster showed a mix of humility and confidence when asked about his skills and how he felt when making his Premier League debut against Leicester City last season.

He feels his fearlessness is one of his biggest strengths and this should stand him in good stead for what is to come in 2021/22.

As he turns 19, find out what our Ivorian youngster has made of his time in Manchester so far...

When asked how he developed his dribbling skills, the former Atalanta man laughed and said: “That is a tough one! But honestly, I think that it is a gift. I think you dribble using your technique and your intelligence.

“So, for example, if you are faced with two defenders, then perhaps you can’t dribble, or you can only play a one-two, so you have to use your head and your skills to decide what to do initially and then your next move. Therefore, when I have the ball, I think about what I can do, play a one-two, dribble, that is what I think.”

While a little bashful when discussing his ability, Amad does feel he has the right attitude to step up to the plate when required.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to deploy a youthful three-pronged attack in the Old Trafford clash with Leicester in May, with Mason Greenwood and Anthony Elanga also starting. Amad responded with the assist for Greenwood's goal and it was a bold move by the boss that again illustrated his faith in the emerging talent at the club.

Amad lets us in to his personality as he provides an insight into what makes him the player, and person, he is.

"To tell you the truth, I am never afraid of playing," he asserted. "That has always been my strength, never being afraid to play. When they told me the day before the game, that I was going to play against Leicester. Okay, I was a bit nervous initially, but this is football, you can never be afraid.

“So when I went onto the pitch, I could just see 11 players against another 11 players and I think it went well, as you say.”

Two of United's players have been selected for the men's tournament in Japan later this month.

If the next stage for the winger proves to be the Olympics, he will need to adopt this fearless mentality again. Both he and Eric Bailly have been named in the Ivory Coast squad for the tournament in China.

The opening game for the African nation is against Saudi Arabia on 22 July before high-profile meetings with Brazil and Germany.

After scoring for his country for the first time, with a free-kick against Burkina Faso recently, there is every reason to be excited by what lies in store for the teenager.
