De Gea sustains injury in training

David De Gea was injured in training as Spain prepare to face Croatia in an eagerly anticipated Euro 2020 round-of-16 encounter.

The Manchester United keeper has not played yet at the tournament, with Athletic Club's Unai Simon preferred between the posts, but his availability was very much in doubt for the match in Copenhagen against the 2018 World Cup finalists.

Although he took part in the session at the Parken Stadium, De Gea was forced to leave the field during the drills, after about 20 minutes, with reports indicating a thigh problem was the cause.

Video footage has shown the 30-year-old walking along the touchline with physios and making his way back to the dressing room in order to undergo treatment.

Simon kept his place against Croatia for the 17:00 BST kick-off in Denmark, with Brighton's Robert Sanchez also on the bench, and it remains to be seen if David is deemed fit enough to come on, if required.

There were suggestions it could only be a minor injury for David, which would be a boost as, if Spain progress, they will face either Paul Pogba's France or Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Friday.

United's other keeper at the tournament, Dean Henderson, was forced to withdraw from the England squad due to a hip injury.
