Double training boost for United

Manchester United have received a double boost ahead of the UEFA Champions League opener with Bayern Munich.

The Reds took part in an open training session at Carrington before the flight to Bavaria on Tuesday afternoon.

After the news that Aaron Wan-Bissaka faces a spell on the sidelines, there is a positive update from Carrington as Raphael Varane and Mason Mount joined the group in front of the cameras.

Although there is no confirmation yet that they could be in the squad for Wednesday's 20:00 BST kick-off, with Burnley to follow on Saturday in the Premier League, the pair's return comes at a welcome time for Erik ten Hag's team.

Ten Hag had said he expected Varane and Mount to be back soon, and they could add plenty of experience and quality to the side as former winners of the competition with their previous clubs.

Defender Varane scored our first goal of the season, the winner against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford, but was forced off at half-time of our next home game, against Nottingham Forest.

Mount, meanwhile, has had little chance to show what he will bring to the team, as the England international has made only two competitive appearances for the club, since joining from Chelsea in the summer.

United will surely still have a number of absentees for the game, our opening fixture in Group A, but it will be interesting to see if Varane and/or Mount can make the trip.

There were another couple of positives to emerge from Tuesday's session, as Kobbie Mainoo took part in an individual light running exercise at Carrington. The 18-year-old is on the comeback trail after suffering an injury during the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the United States in July.

Sofyan Amrabat was also working on his own, with the Moroccan still awaiting his United debut having joined on loan from Fiorentina.

Full details of the travelling squad will be announced on the United App and ManUtd.com ahead of the flight to Germany.
