When United play City and Liverpool in the league

Tuesday 18 June 2024 09:00

We now know when Manchester United are set to meet with all 19 of our Premier League opponents home and away over the course of the 2024/25 season, including arch-rivals Liverpool and Man City.

The games against the aforementioned opponents are always a first calling point when casting an eye over the fixture list, and the good news for supporters is that we will not have to wait long for a big clash involving Erik ten Hag's Reds.

United are set to face Liverpool at Old Trafford on the provisional date of Saturday 31 August, in what will be our third league outing of the campaign, following an opening fixture at home to Fulham and a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Revealed: United's 24/25 Premier League fixtures

Erik ten Hag's Reds will begin and end the new league campaign at Old Trafford.

There will be a new man in the Merseysiders' dugout when they arrive in M16 for our final match before the September international window, with former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot now in charge at Anfield, following Jurgen Klopp's departure last month.

The return fixture against Slot's Liverpool is currently first up on United's calendar for 2025, as it is pencilled in for Saturday 4 January.

Before then, the Reds will do battle with Pep Guardiola's City at the Etihad Stadium. The first Manchester derby of the league term, following August's clash at Wembley in the Community Shield, is on the schedule for Saturday 14 December.

The conditional Old Trafford date for your diary is Saturday 5 April, with Ten Hag's team set for a late-season meeting with the reigning champions at the Theatre of Dreams.

  • Hackett: Refereeing at the top

In a first for the UTD podcast, this week we have a referee, and not just any referee, former head of referees, Keith Hackett. For this one, Sam and Helen are joined by Wes Brown, who is filling in for Maysie. In a career spanning from 1972 to 1994, Keith worked in the English Football League (and international football) as a linesman and referee. He refereed the 1990/91 league encounter between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford, a match notorious for the 21-man brawl breaking out just after the hour mark. Keith also refereed his last-ever match at Old Trafford, a game between United and Liverpool. Keith later worked as a referees' assessor before, on 1 March 2004, he was appointed general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). Today, Keith talks about a long career refereeing at the top level of football, his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as how the game is changing. Warning - VAR chat incoming!
