Academy Weekly: FA Youth Cup fourth round approaches

Tuesday 16 January 2024 08:38

Our Under-18s' FA Youth Cup campaign continues on Tuesday evening, as Adam Lawrence’s side take on Swindon Town at the County Ground in the fourth round.

The young Reds produced a hard-fought victory over Derby County in the third round at Old Trafford when Ethan Williams came off the bench to score the game’s only goal.

The winner of Tuesday’s encounter — a 19:00 GMT kick-off — will travel to Gillingham or Sunderland in the fifth round.

Subscribers in the UK and Ireland can watch the match live on MUTV, where coverage begins 15 minutes before kick-off.

Hugill signs new contract, joins Burton on loan

Joe Hugill has joined League One club Burton Albion on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The young Academy striker also signed a new deal with the Reds last week, which will keep him at the club until 2026, with the option of an extra year.

Hugill will now gain valuable experience at the Pirelli Stadium, as part of a Brewers squad under the charge of Martin Paterson, who was appointed as their new head coach earlier this week.

The young striker netted on his debut for the League One outfit on Monday, as Burton were defeated 3-2 away to Derby County.

Joe has trained regularly with the first team this season, being named as a substitute by Erik ten Hag on four occasions, most recently for Monday's 2-0 Emirates FA Cup victory at Wigan Athletic.

He initially joined United from Sunderland in the summer of 2020 and was part of the squad which won the FA Youth Cup two seasons ago.

The 20-year-old has eight goals in all competitions for Travis Binnion's Under-21s this term and will hope to continue his recent progress in the third tier, with Burton currently placed 17th in the table.

Under-18s defeat Newcastle

Second-half goals from Williams, Ashton Missin and Jayce Fitzgerald secured a 3-1 victory for our Under-18s at Newcastle United, maintaining our winning streak in the league and ensuring a confident mood ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Youth Cup fourth-round tie at Swindon Town.

Under-21s beaten at Chelsea

Manchester United Under-21s succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against Chelsea in Premier League 2 on Friday evening.

Donnell McNeilly opened the scoring after half an hour played in the capital for the Blues, reacting the quickest following Dylan Williams' cross into the area.

McNeilly then doubled the hosts’ advantage in first-half stoppage time, prodding home Zak Sturge's cutback from the byline.

United captain Shola Shoretire scored twice inside six second-half minutes to level the game once more, before Tyrique George's late winner proved pivotal.

Graduate achievements

Four Academy graduates started the men’s first team’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. After Jonny Evans, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho’s involvement from the start, Scott McTominay came off the bench. Tom Heaton, Willy Kambwala and Omari Forson, meanwhile, were unused substitutes.

A total of eight graduates were involved, maintaining our unique record of 4,238 consecutive first team matches with an Academy graduate in the matchday squad. That run dates back to October 1937.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, graduates featured in all but one game over the weekend. Teden Mengi and Tahith Chong played for Luton Town against Burnley, Andreas Pereira for Fulham at Chelsea and James Garner played the full game in midfield for Everton in a home draw versus Aston Villa. The Academy is proud of all these players and the many others achieving success right throughout the English football pyramid and abroad.
