Russo: What a day!

Sunday 27 March 2022 15:29

Manchester United Women’s forward Alessia Russo has shared her delight at the Reds capping a special Old Trafford occasion with three massive points, following the 3-1 win over Everton.

Marc Skinner’s side took to the turf at the Theatre of Dreams for the first-ever time in front of fans on Sunday and came from behind to ensure it was a good day all round in M16.

Having gone behind four minutes in, Russo levelled the game up before half-time prior to Katie Zelem’s go-ahead penalty. Alessia then completed the scoring with her second of the contest in the closing stages, wrapping up a big three points in the context of Champions League qualification.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, our no.23 summed up the experience as a whole.

Marc Skinner's Reds come from behind to secure three important WSL points at Old Trafford.

“I mean, what a day! Obviously three points was on the agenda today, so doing that was amazing and the two headers were a bonus,” Russo explained post-match.

“To be able to play in front of all our friends and family today was really special.”

With spirits high in the warm-ups and right through to kick-off, Russo and co had to respond to an early setback after the visitors took an early lead.

The forward, who was named Player of the Match, says it didn’t come as a surprise to the Reds, who were well aware of the quality that the Toffees would bring to M16.

“We knew Everton are a top side and they pose such a big threat going forward and it was a great finish from Claire.

“We knew we had to be resilient, we knew what they could throw at us.

“We rode the game out well and obviously got the result.”

Alessia says United can now properly take in a memorable day at Old Trafford having secured the win against Everton...

The win opens up a three-point gap to Manchester City outside of the European places with four games to go, while our crosstown rivals still have to play five, after their fixture scheduled for this weekend was postponed.

Russo says that United’s full focus is now on taking maximum points from every one of our four matches remaining, starting with the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion to Leigh Sports Village next Sunday.

“All we’ve got to focus on now is taking all the points from the games we’ve got left and the rest will do its talking,” Alessia insisted.

“We want to score as many goals as we can and we pride ourselves on clean sheets, today that wasn’t the case.

“All we’re focused on is getting the points and moving forward.”
