Telles wins Europa League with Sevilla

Manchester United defender Alex Telles helped his loan side Sevilla claim Europa League success on Wednesday evening, as the Spanish outfit beat Roma 4-1 in a penalty shootout after the match finished 1-1, after extra time.

The 30-year-old defender played 94 minutes before being replaced by Karim Rekik, as Mendilibar's side claimed yet another famous European triumph - Sevilla's seventh in history.

Paulo Dybala had opened the scoring for Roma - currently managed by former United boss Jose Mourinho - inside the first half, before Gianluca Mancini put the ball in his own net ten minutes into the second period, forcing extra time.

With neither team able to find a way through during the additional 30 minutes, the tie was settled on penalties. Gonzalo Montiel, Argentina team-mate of United's Lisandro Martinez, scored the decisive spot-kick to hand Sevilla the trophy.

Montiel and Telles celebrate their Europa League success after an entertaining contest in Budapest.

Telles has played plenty of La Liga and European football during his temporary switch to Sevilla, including an appearance in all six of his sides UEFA Champions League group-stage clashes.

Having finished third behind Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in Group G, the Spanish side dropped into Europe's secondary club competition and have once again enjoyed success, claiming the crown for a record seventh time.

Their route to the final in Budapest included victories over PSV, and Fenerbahce, before they eliminated Erik ten Hag's Reds in the quarter-finals.

Sevilla then toppled Juventus in the semis, before edging Mourinho's Roma in the final to claim a record seventh Europa League title.

There were plenty of other former Reds in action across the hotly-anticipated contest, too, with both Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic starting for Roma.

Smalling has become something of a regular following his move to Rome back in 2020, with Matic having just completed his first full season in Italy after departing Manchester at the end of our 2021/22 campaign.

Despite taking the lead in the contest, it wasn't to be for the Giallorossi, with wild scenes clear for all to see following another Sevilla success.

Congratulations on your triumph, Alex!
