Alexis Sanchez powers forward for Chile against Peru.

Alexis's Chile lose out to Peru in Copa America

Thursday 04 July 2019 10:39

Alexis Sanchez's dreams of winning a third successive Copa America trophy with Chile were ended as Peru eased to a 3-0 semi-final victory.

The Peruvians booked a place in their first final since 1975, thanks to goals from Edison Flores, Yoshimar Yotun and, late on, Paolo Guerrero.

To rub salt in the wounds, Chile also missed a penalty in stoppage time, when Eduardo Vargas's 'Panenka' spot-kick was saved by Pedro Gallese.

Alexis Sanchez keeps his eye on the ball during a disappointing night for his country.

Alexis, who has been in fine form during the tournament, almost scored from a corner in the first half and later forced a superb save out of Gallese with a powerful drive.

Peru face hosts Brazil in Sunday's final in Rio (21:00 BST kick-off), with Chile, who won the competition in 2015 and 2016, meeting Argentina in the third-place play-off on Saturday in Sao Paulo at 20:00 BST.
