Cole back for Legends of the North match
One of the club’s most prolific forwards will take his seat in the Old Trafford dugout as assistant coach when a team of Manchester United Legends face Liverpool on Saturday 21 May.
The announcement comes after fellow Reds favourite Bryan Robson was confirmed as team manager, with ex-striker Cole further bolstering this impressive backroom line-up as tickets are still on sale for the big event.
Known to the Stretford End as 'Goal King Cole', Andy loved to score against the men from down the East Lancs Road, notching 11 times against them across 23 career appearances – the joint-most he scored against any club.
This includes four in the red shirt of United, with a memorable brace in a 3-1 win at Anfield back in 1997 being the standout for many fans.
“I’m very much looking forward to linking up with Bryan as part of his coaching team and, hopefully, we can help the lads to a win and send the fans home happy!”
Cole has featured in many of our previous Legends matches as a player and as a manager, against some of European football’s most famous sides, but everyone associated with United will know that a game against Liverpool carries that extra edge.
“I think it means an awful lot to the fans,” he added. “When we have the Legends games, it’s always great to see that people still turn up to watch us and I’m sure that this one will be no exception with Liverpool coming to town.”
The showpiece match will be used to raise funds for Manchester United Foundation’s many community initiatives, with all profits raised going to our work with young people. As well as supporting our Legends matches, Cole has also visited some of our local projects down the years and encourages all supporters to help out too.
“I’m one who always likes to be involved in these games. There’s a lot of people putting in a lot of hard work so that the club can continue to put back into the community and it’s important that ex-players and fans support that too. So by coming to the game and cheering us on, you’re also helping the Foundation and the young people of Greater Manchester too.”
Now that we have confirmed our two lead coaches, attention will obviously turn to the playing squad. Previous games have featured some illustrious names from United’s history, so keep an eye on ManUtd.com, the United App and social channels to be the first to hear about who will be in Robbo and Coley’s squad.
Saturday 21 May promises to be a memorable afternoon at the Theatre of Dreams, so make sure you don’t miss out. Secure your seat now!
